I'm guessing u are referring to virus problems,spyware,or maybe registry issue's? In either case some good (&free) progs to help would be spybot search and destroy,microsoft antispyware,and ccleaner.

Try Windows Defender you can download it from microsoft.com, this will search for unwanted programs and settings that may be harmful. Also set your virus scanner to scan your computer.
To check hard disks for errors go to my computer right click a hard disk select properties, select the tools tab and click 'check now' under error checking. Other than those I'm not sure.

If you have a legal copy of Windows XP Pro, then pleses download Windows Defender from Microsoft's website.
Otherwise, you have to check you system logs (%SystemRoot%\system32\compmgmt.msc /s) daily.

what type of problems are you wanting to check for?
If you mean viruses or spyware you need a software program like McAffee or Nortons Antivirus. these scan all of the folders in your computer and check the files against files listed in their databases as viruses.
