Before you buy a scanner ask yourself the following questions :
(1) Do I want to scan documents only?
(2) Do I want toscan documents and pictures only?
(3) Do I want to scan everything under the sun?
Answers :
(1) Get a standard resolution scanner (around 1200 ppi) - not so expensive
(2) Get a high resolution scanner ( more than 1200 ppi) - a bit more expensive
(3) Get a very high resolution scanner - EXPENSIVE.
HP, Cannon and others will give you the choices of scanners above.

Depends on your budget. Microtek Scanmaker is good enough and affordable. If you have flexible budget try Epson Perfection.
