I have not visited New Zealand yet, but, I am moving back to Australia with my son, an American Citizen and my daughter who is a duel citizen of the USA and Australia. We are going back to Australia by way of New Zealand next. On our way to Australia, we spent the night in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, re-fueled in Stockholm, Sweden as well as Dubaii.
I am really looking forward to our stay over night in New Zealand. Good luck and I hope you enjoy... :))

I'm from New Zealand and yes its a beautiful place. Auckland is the biggest city, Wellington the capital city. There are alot beautiful places. I come from up North (Whangarei). I'd say if you hire a camper van and travel from the tip of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island and take a leisurely tour of New Zealand you might find things that interest you. It varies on what you would find interesting but there are alot physical landscapes that are considered amazing. Geographically it has great beaches and good ski fields a bit like Colorado except its surrounded by beaches or the ocean so its not very far from the beaches. Outdoor activities fishing, surfing diving, skiing as well as great wineries and restaraunts, its alot more to offer. Its a small country and its quite expensive but you will enjoy it just take care. Like everything personal security is paramount. theres a few things that I hope will help.

Yes, it is gorgeous. Best is to do a self-drive holiday, so you can stop at places you like. Just go with a map and drive.
You can make it an ad-hoc itinerary. You can start at the South Island. Fly into Christchurch. rent a car and head off. You can use the highways easily. Plan to go from town to town and work out a simple pattern. The sights along the way are nice and changing. You will get to see different things along the way. really scenic. You can easily get motels in the town/city along the way. So really take it easy and go. The major tourist spots will be on the map, so, you can take your time and visit.
You can easily spend about 2-3 weeks just doing this around South Island. This place has got varying scenes in different parts, so just relax and enjoy the sights.

Yes. New Zealand is spectacular, the geography is unique, the people are warm and friendly. Don't miss Christchurch, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Wellington, Tongariro, Rotorua, Bay of Islands. Aukland you can skip.
Don't worry about planning your trip in too much detail. There is an excellent tourist information system over there. Among other things they make it very easy to hop from town to town in the bed & breakfast network, just calling ahead one or two nights in advance to find a room. All you need to book in advance is a rental car (must have) and a hotel room for your first night in the country.
The only exception to that is to plan far ahead for the day you cross from South Island to North Island (or vice versa). Unless things have changed since my visit, you need a ferry reservation, and you are not allowed to take rental cars on the ferries! That means you must set up your car rental reservations well in advance to drop your car at the ferry terminal on one side, and pick up a new car on the other side. If you don't do that, you can get stuck with an unplanned drop charge on your rental contract, and be stuck on the other side waiting for a new car to free up for days. Not good. :-(

I have been in NZ since Feb. It is a beautiful country with lots of friendly people. I have seen and done so many different things. My recommendations are to rent a car or campervan, and just drive around to as many places as you can.
Recommendations:
Top 10 things
1. Sea Kayaking in the Abel Tasman National Park
2. Snorkeling along the Cormadel Peninsula
3. Seeing Cape Reinga
4. Seeing Queenstown
5. Touring Milford Sound
6. Waitomo Glow Worm Caves
7. Seeing the Islands around Auckland
8. Sailing in the Bay of Islands
9. Seeing Dunedin
10. Seeing Wellington

Yes, it's a beautiful country, especially the South Island. I guess you can rent a car there and start driving from the top, such as Auckland in the North Island to Dunedin (in the South Island), passing through all the scenic places and cities. You will have a great time there, for sure.

I live in Wellington. That is NZ's capital if you didn't know.
Yes, NZ has lots of beautiful scenery, friendly people, no snakes and lots of room for tourists. We are in winter right now, but even so the sun is shining, and it is about 12C so not really cold.
Look up places on the Net to visit - Rotorua, Taupo, Queenstown, Mt Cook just to name a few. If you are into adventure travel, come and do a bungy jump, or tandem skydive, or jetboat ride. We have it all here.
Let me know if you'd like to know more.
