Hi I have a maltese x shih tzu who is suddently not eating. I want her to eat dry food because I know it is best for her. She is nearly 5 1/2 months old. Yesterday I bought her some dry food and mixed it up with mince steak that I fried up. She loved it and ate heaps. This morning didnt want to touch her food all she did was smell it. In the afternoon I started to worry about her and made some chicken for her which she ate. Tonight she does not want to eat anything. She is drinking water very well and is very energetic she has not lost any stamina whatsoever. Can anybody help me. I have tried so many foods mixed with her dry food. I want to do the right thing for my puppy how many days can I leave her hungry because some people say leave her when she gets hungry she will eat. Dont know whether I have spoiled her or what need somebody's help urgently

Talk to your veterinarian. Do what's best for your puppy so nothing happens to her.

You have spoiled her. You must now perform "tough love". Only offer the dog food. She is holding out for something better and if you don't win this battle now, you will have a picky eater forever. By changing foods a lot, you may have upset her stomach. Then she didn't eat and you got worried. When changing food, you need to do it slowly. Adding a little of the new with the old and changing the amounts daily. I normally take a week to change foods on mine. She will not stave to death.
When I bring in a new rescue dog, I already know that this dog may not eat for a day or two. I know that when it does, it will probably have loose stools for a day or two after that. After years of rescues, I have never had one starve to death yet.

My puppy is a funny eater too. I tried mixing his dry food with allsorts of things which he did not like at all. In the end I took him to the vets and he said not to worry too much just be encouraging. So I sat with him when he ate, first feeding him out of my hand, getting closer to the bowl till finally he was just eatng out of the bowl, all the time telling him what a good boy he is. He learnt the word biscuits so I just have to be realy encouraging and tell him to eat his biscuits. Now when he eats his biscuits he looks at me as if to say 'hey look Im a good dog I am!!' He doesn't eat at set times but he will when he's hungry and thats good enough for me. I have a Cavalier King Charles by the way!

This happens a lot with pets. Buy canned dog food. At first give it to her straight. Daily, add a little bit more of the dry food. If she snubs the dry food, she is probably being stubborn.
I agree that if this persist, see or call your vet. Just try this and see if she starts eating. She may be too young for the food or have sensitive mouth. Talk to the vet first and ask if they feel this is the best. My shih tzu is stubborn and is extremely stubborn. This makes him so cute. He just got through trying me with the same problem as your baby. He is attempting to strike because his bowl has dry food again. gotta love them.

You do know that wolves in the wild gourge one day & frequently don't bother to russel up anything to eat the next. So if she eats heaps one time it's unlikely she'll be terribly hungy the by eavning (how much to you eat the meal after thanksgiving dinner?) so she's in no difficulty holding out for the "good stuff" (pie for supper after thanksgiving)
If she wan't eating the good stuff I'd say "vet do not pass go haed directly to vet" but I have a strong suspition she's got you well trained ....

ANd yes I had one who ate like a pig one meal (dry kibble) and gave me a "why are you so mean to me" look at the sight of food the next. I had to limit each meal ... so remember sh'e a LITLE girl she isn't gonna eat like a st Bernard.

I'm certainly no expert, but what I can say with certainty is that if you stick to your guns and refuse to give her anything else, she WILL start to eat whatever is down, due to its basic survival instinct. When she gets hungry enough and realises you are not going to give in and feed her something she prefers, she will eat what you give her. She will NOT starve herself to death, trust me. Think of it like this, if you were to abandon her to the street(don't worry, just an example!)she would have noone to feed her so she would get really hungry and eventually eat whatever she could find just to survive!
It can be hard, but just stick to it, as, like you said, it's for the dogs benefit in the long run.
Every animal can go without food for weeks before starving to death. As long as she is drinking, all is fine and she WILL come round and start to eat what you give her as long as you don't give in!

Good luck.
