Does the smoking ban in scotland infringe on peoples human rights? are smokers now being treated like second class citizens?

so things should change because non smokers want to come back from a night out not smelling of smoke? the thing about pubs is they're always smokey n always have been, if you want fresh air why dont you buy your drink and go sit outside when its minus 10 and there's three feet of snow, would that be fair? because thats what smokers now have to do,

I think it's a really good idea. Smoking not only impacts the smokers health, it also affects those around them. If you're going to say it infringes on peoples' human rights, then I could easily argue that as a non smoker, being exposed to second hand smoke is an infringement of MY human rights.

Most of the smokers I've spoken to actually aren't that bothered by the smoking ban, and are quite pleased that it's actually helped them cut down. I haven't met that many people who are against it to be honest. And I like it because it means I can go into a pub with my friends without having to take an inhaler with me, because my asthma is very triggered by smoke.

I live in Scotland and i am a smoker and yes i feel discriminated against. We now cannot smoke in any public place. If we go out to a bar, restaurant or club etc.... we cannot smoke. All that has happened is people are now hanging around the door outside these places to smoke and the ground is littered in cigarette ends. It looks worse. Was designated smoking areas not a better idea. Also, how come the smoking ban was introduced in Scotland and not England also. That does not seem fair to me.

No, not having a smoking ban infringes on people's human rights. No-one is forcing you to smoke. So why should the non-smoking majority have to either not go out, or go out and breathe in their lingering foul smelling carcinogenic fumes. Personally I'd prefer to have a social life and not die a horrible death from oesophageal cancer the way my father, a lifelong non-smoker with horrible selfish chain-smoking parents did. Smokers have had it their way for hundreds of years, and banning smoking in public places is about the only sensible thing the Scottish parliament has done. I just hope by the time you lot are coughing up blood you will be denied NHS treatment for your vile selfish self-inflicted habit, you low class schemie peasants.

I think so. I'm in Washington State and they just passed a smoking ban that says you have to be 25 feet from doorways. It's ridiculous. It also gives anti-smokers reason to act like A55h0les.
Meanwhile, one can't see Mount Rainier from Seattle on a still day because of the pollution from traffic. I wonder if they'll ban Barbecues next.

I'm in Ireland where we've had the ban for a couple of years. Pubs are so much nicer now, and many of them have made outdoor smoking areas. It is a pleasure to be able to sit have a drink without getting the sore eyes and back of throat.

People here predicted doom and gloom too, but it never happened.

simply, no! i'm living in ireland where the smoking ban has been in place for a number of years now, and it has proven to be effective, the smokers have accepted it, and now almost all bars have a smoking area ie beer garden or an 'open room' that the smokers get to enjoy, so they have the best of both worlds!

I'm sick of all this human rights crap. I'm fed up with smokers walking past me while smoking and I get choked by the foul smelling **** that comes from them.

i totally agree. as a smoker i think its digusting how we are treated.iwent to a wedding at a registry office and i wasnt even allowed to smoke in the grounds even if i picked up the cigarette butt and took it away with me.if i won a massive amount on the lottery i would have my own chain of smoking cinemas my own smoking airline, buses, and trains with ridiculously cheap fares and if you didnt smoke you could p.ss off.
