It depends: if you're having lots of children, then it's a disadvantage because it costs tons of money to raise them.

If you're in a large family with lots of brothers, sisters, cousins, etc., then it's an advantage because you have lots of people to relate to. I'm an only child with only a mom, step-dad, aunt & great aunt in my family. I've married into a huge family but it's not the same as if they were my personal family. Sadly, I'm still pretty much an outsider at times. So this is my opinion of what it would be like if I had a large family.

It is for me. I am now (nearly 40..LOL) I was the oldest of 9 children, we were quite poor growing up, but man... try picking on one of us when were kids, didn't happen much..LOL you had a whole tribe after you.

Now, I have 4 kids of my own, and I wouldn't have it any other way. If I could have more kids I would. Yes, its hectic, and yes... its expensive, my husband and I don't get to do a whole lot except kid stuff (sporting events and making sure the kids are involved in all their school activities) but ya know what... my kids won't be kids for long, and when they are grown, I can't wait for the grandkids.

I used to pray to be an only child when I was younger, because I was the oldest of the group. Now I am blessed in many ways because of my family. We have help when we need it, we have support when we need it, now that we have grown (and my husbands family is huge too) its like when we all get together we could actually populate a large town if not a small city. There are strength in numbers and an abundance in love and support. Of course you have a few idiots in the crowd.. but what family doesn't.

I think so if you have a close family because there are more people love you, help you, and be there for you. I have 5 children and love it. There is never a dull moment. My husband and I both come from large families. My children are close and very sweet to each other. I don't know if the size really matters. I think it matters more how you are raised. Being from a big family I think you learn how to share and help each other more.

It depends on the stability of the couple, Ma and Pa. Also--here in India, I don't much care for the population density...think about the big picture. You can make a large extended family, and sustain a lower environmental impact in the long run...

Yes... large extended families can pool their money together and help each other out. Here in the states that generally doesn't happen. In fact having more than 2 children is very expensive here.

So I guess it can swing both ways.

Back in the days where many people were needed for agriculture to farm their own land, it was an advantage. Since we now have the ability to farm large areas of land with just one or two people, and most of us don't have our own land and depend on external sources for our resouces, No.

im 1 out of 8 kids;;; I have 1 child.
my child wanted a sibling to know what it was like to have another kid in house. I have told her fun time and bad time of being in a huge family.
having a big family takes lots of money; patience and responsibility. I would advise against having this many in this day in age with gas prices being 3$/gallon and milk too. takes too much to have a kid anymore.
almost need a second job to raise kids.

It doesn't matter to a wealthy family, as long as the kids don't amass their parents' fortune by being all hard-headed and stupid bratts.

However, if you're hard up, better have one or two kids. And let them understand the value of education. They'll sure to do their hardest to pull your family from the dumps.
