Earnie Shaver was a contender.

Although Shavers never became Heavyweight champion, he has often been rated as perhaps the hardest puncher in heavyweight history. Shavers compiled one of the most amazing records in boxing history. At one point he won almost thirty fights in a row by knockout. He scored over 20 victories in the first round alone.

Tyson is a contender with 44 kos in 58 fights but pound for pound. But Roberto Duran, Julio Cesar Chavez, Floyd Mayweather would be in the top ten pound for pound one punch KO experts.

But with a touch of research, it seems Stanley Ketchel with 48 kos in 52 fights seems to fought above his weight. As a middleweights in the 1900s he was fighting heavyweights 30 or 40 pounds heavier than him and knocking them out.

There are several potential winners of this accolade. Foreman and Tyson are predictably popular selections are are two of the hardest hitting fighters of all time.

And of course, when discussing punching power the tendancy is to lean toward the heavyweights where the weight of punch is theoretically greatest.

However, I would venture that it is hard to look past former Light-Middleweight champion Julian Jackson as the purest puncher that ever graced a ring - though his own chin was vulnerable too. His knockout of Herol Graham was cold, pure, raw power at it's best. A mile behind and on the brink of being stopped Jackson summoned a punch that would have decked fighters a stone heavier.

Graham was out before he hit the canvas. Jackson was a phenomenon.

Despite that, I'd opt for the Ole' Mongoose; Archie Moore who knocked out 174 fighters in a career that spanned both the Marciano and Ali era's.

Archie Moore was a crafty, awkward, boxer - with the heart of a lion and the punch of a mule. He decked Marciano, a fact that encouraged the Rock to retire when he did, and was equally formidable as a light-heavyweight.

His ability to knockout opponents early and late, at different weight classes over a twenty five year career and amass a knockout count that nobody will ever surpass marks him down as the purest puncher in the history of the sport.

Archie Moore was the knockout king in my book.

Marciano was a small h/w koing nearly all contenders so would have to be a contender, Ketchel was an excellent shout by Brogdenuk, the older fighters seem to be getting forgotten which is a shame.

My personal selection would be Jimmy Wilde he wasnt called "The ghost with a hammer in his hands" for nothing he started in the boxing booths where he had upwards of 500 fights and ended up as probably Britains greatest fighter. He looked as if a stiff breeze would blow him over but was in some real battles he retired with a record of 131 wins, 3 losses, 2 draws and 13 no-decisions, with 99 wins by knockout

If you'd like to lean more on "the mighty atom" heres a link to a brief biog

'Sugar' Ray Robinson. Surely the greatest pound for pound boxer that has ever lived.
Joe Louis would have to be up there also, along with Jimmy Wilde, Ernie Shavers and so many more!!

Pound for pound the greatest boxer of all time has to be Robbie Duran. Pound for pound the greatest bout of all time must be Duran versus Sugar Ray Leonard. One punch boxers are usually crap in that if the first punch doesn't land, they are in BIG trouble....

Is this a serious question? This is ludicrous. Of course it is Mike Tyson. He'll knock you out, then pick you back up and kiss you on the cheek. That cat is an animal.
