I'm am starting to plan a road trip from Memphis to Alaska and back for next summer for myself and maybe 3 friends. Just wondering if anyone has some tips for road trip success? Any great places to mt climb, camp, hike, etc on the way that you've been too? How about in Anchorage, what is worth doing? Cheap yet quality train tickets, rental cars, bus tickets for the trip?

Anyone here ever done the same thing?

thanks for the tips. we're starting to plan now, but we're gonna leave it open enough to stop and do random things, have as much fun as possible. We're all in NROTC (Navy and MArine Options) so this will be the last chance for any trip like this for all ofus for a long time. Figure we should see the country we're gonna be protecting before going off to other ones (if we do). Thanks again.

do your planning early if you plan to stay in any motels -especially in fairbanks. Take extra water. Keep your gas tank filled to the max whenever you can. Carry some food, too. Because places with amenities are just about exactly one day's drive away from each other in a lot of places. In any little grocery or 7-11 type store, look for a book on alaska travel that is about 9 by 12 and an inch thick and is set up town by town and costs around ten bucks. It has lots of helpful info and maps for you. Get one now if you know anyone who can send you one.I wish I could think of the name of it. An AAA guide and maps would do pretty well. too..we found the most expensive thing to be food (in grocery stores) but that may have changed - depends on how they have to ship it in. Fish are great and plentiful and huge in some streams if you like to fish. In Fairbanks the only decent motel we could find was Motel 6 and we were wayyy lucky to get that. Like I said plan ahead if you plan to stay at any motels. Oh, I envy you. Wish I could go. Incidently, we just put our car on a ferrry and took off without a plan of any kind and did just fine. So have fun.

Southeast Alaska is a beautiful place to explore, but you won't be able to drive direct. The Alaska Marine Highway System will get you in if you don't want to fly. Taking your car is an option, but summer prices for taking your car on the ferry are pretty high, so consider just walking on - they'll be a bus or shuttle available cheaply when you get to port.

Consider visiting Juneau, Sitka, and maybe a tiny community or two, like Tennakee Hot Springs.
