Check with your insurance company to find out exactly what’s covered under your own auto insurance policy.
The best way to protect yourself when using a rental car is to purchase a regular automobile insurance policy that explicitly extends collision and comprehensive coverage to rental cars in any state or country.

In your dreams. There is no such thing as a simple explanation for an insurance policy. Your best bet to to get coverage through your own car insurance company and reject the rental car company's version. Because they can't do a comprehensive check of your past driving habits, the rental company assumes that every customer is going to wreck its cars. And they charge based on that assumption.
