whatever you want it to represent.
in literature... you can use black to represent white... it doesn't matter as long as you use it well and clearly.
snow can represent anything in the world... as long as the writer wants it to be so.
as such and simply... usually its coldness, indiferrence, suffering and pure beauty.

Snow can represent many things. Sometimes, snow can represent anguish, fear, uncertainty. Other times, it can represent happiness, but mostly, snow just represents what is around, a white void. It is an interesting question and I hope you can get some interesting answers.

Purity
Sterility
Emptiness (void)
Future (waiting for the snow to melt and the green grass to come through)
Of course, there's also dirty snow that sticks to your boots. It's something you may have trouble getting rid of because you keep ending up in the same muck.

isolation, hibernation in a time of awaiting renewal, long cleansing, pain before pleasure, are some ideas for what heavy snowfall may represent but. . .
contextual meaning would be what you derive from the situation, what are the characters experiencing that parallels the snowfall?

My first response would be cold, lost, and isolated, especially if juxtaposed with the warmth of a house and family. I could see the others answers as making sense though.

those are good answers... maybe elusiveness? snow is beautiful and pure, but if you try to hold it, it will melt on your hands.
or something temporary. snow will not last forever. a temporary cover up, or fix, that will eventually melt and show the permanent.

purity, cleanliness, something being covered up or hidden... It really depends on the context. You should include something about it in the question.
