The bible is truly the inspired word of God. But to understand it one has to first of all have the Holy Spirit. And then one has to know the full context, literary genre used, culture, etc.

But fortunately, God made it easy for us and gave us the Catholic Church to be the great interpreter of sacred scripture so that we don't all have to be Theologians and spend our whole lives trying to interpret it.

Try reading it with an open mind.

If people can suspend their disbelief when reading a book like "The Da Vinci Code" which is clearly labeled as "fiction" and wonder "could it be true?", why is it so hard for people to read the bible with an open mind to believing what it says?

The bible was NEVER classified as fiction and has stood the test of time of hundreds and thousands of years of intense scrutiny. But the fact that people are still trying to debunk it after over 1500 years is a testament to its truth.

Maybe if the bible would have had the word "Fiction" written on the cover more people would believe that it's true?

First, your question does not even allow for a truthful answer. It is not legend, it is not stories. It is historical accounts, poetry, songs, psalms--all pointing to the redemption of man. I have documented how the Bible, and no other "holy book" can prove that its origin is from outside our time domain. So anyone who thinks the Bible is a "farce", "mythology, or legend had better study up on that side of the equation.

It's a story book nothing more. The first half is stores about random stuff and the second half is the story (edited through out history) of a magician who told people he was the son of god (for some reason publicity because he had always been told that by his parents who wanted to make some money out of him who knows). That is all the bible is and anyone who reads it as truth is an idiot.

I'm a true believer - why would legends receive so much attention and debate if they were not principles and powers that knew if mankind recognized the truths and repented their wickedness unto Jesus Christ that the world would be changed? Legends would not create within mankind a need to debate, they would be accepted as legends and myths and therein they would lie.

The scriptures which make up the Bible is a compilation of the history of humankind on earth since its 'beginning'. Yes, a lot of it is in legendary form because the stories were then passed down by word of mouth to succeeding generations. The prominent events that later ensued were documented by various methods into primitive 'hard copy' form by the many prophets, their followers and scribes.

A collection of myths, fables, parables and fairy tales. And no, it is not a "love letter" from God. Anyone who has actually read the Bible (like, say, the Book of Revelations) would know better than to make such a vacuous statement.

more parables than legends. Good stories that will one day be put on the same shelf as Aesops Fables, The Iliad, The Odyssey, and works of Plato.

I doubt God wants humans to fear him, think about, if god wanted you afraid of him dont you think you would be afraid of more than something as abstract as Hell? If god want us afraid, then we would definately be afraid.

Remember keep religion as an IDEA, not a BELIEF. You can change an Idea, but people will die for a belief.

If the mythology was as imaginative as the Greek I'd certainly respect it more. But it does contain some decent spiritual info. The parts which are racist and political in nature have no value and should be avoided completely. But all in all I find it to be a superb collection of scripture.
