Try the national do not call registry
www.donotcall.gov
Takes up to 31 days for it to take effect.

Also seen some devices sold at Best Buy that are telemarketing zappers... they supposedly detect the machines used for war dialing (telemarketing) and hang up on them before your phone even rings. Not sure if that works or not.

In addition to putting yourself on the "do-not-call" list mentioned by others, there's an additional thing you can do _IF_ you have "Caller ID" on your phone line. With Caller ID, you can block "anonymous" callers, which don't show up on Caller ID when the phone rings. Maybe a friend or family member has an unlisted number which will get blocked, but you can set their number to get past the block. But most callers that hide their phone numbers are sales callers.

You need a pan sitting under a water faucet . When the telemarketer calls , just say "hold on , I have to pee" . Then place the phone next to the water spouting into the pan , and walk away.
If you do this each time you get the telemarketing call , they will put you on the "do-not-call" list and you will live happily ever after.
