Electronics use all sorts of nasty chemicals;
eg solder consisting of lead & tin, tantalum (also funds many warlords in africa); doping chemicals can include arsnic; printed circuit boards photo etching chemicals... most dioxin pollution comes from electronics, eg electrolictic materials & insulators
Packaging plastics paint varnish & coatings themselves are noxious if burned, but also give off a number of gasses normally, especially pvc cable insulation.
Some batteries use heavy metals like cadmium
In use put your electronic mobile phone near a speaker system like your pc to hear the electro-magnetic pollution; there are all sorts of high frequency emmisions which is why you are asked to turn of pcs etc on aircraft.
plus all the common pollutants from global trading system, packaging & transport, unenforced health & saftey regulations etc
and energy consumption in use and on stand-by

It depends on how the electricity is generated. Where I'm from, the electricity is mostly generated by hydroelectric dams so electronics don't really cause any pollution. In a lot of the country, like a previous poster said, the electricity is generated by coal power plants so the electronics are definitely causing greenhouse gasses to be released into the air. If you're that worried about it, buy yourself a bunch of solar panels.

I saw on the news once that when electronics are thrown away some are burned which causes chemicals that are hazardous to people's health to be released into the environment.

you bet. your coal plant produce nasty bi-products to the air, your nuclear power plants leave radio active material behind that has a tendency to find its way into water sources. You might say hydro electric does not pollute (per se) but it has other detriments. Nothing comes without cost.
