if your looking for a used 4x4 look under the truck look for damage to frame under body ect if there are dents scratches lots of mud basic damge then its probly seen a rough life.
also if your looking for used try and stay away from something that is lifted big tires and wheels and lots of mods . look for stock grandpa truck and add all the goodies if you want them. It's less likey to have been abused if it looks stock

Put in 4wd high and drive it for about 10 mi. at a moderate(25-35 mph) stop and put in in nuetral downshift to 4wd low and creep along at 5-10 mph and see if this all works fine Some people buy 4wd and never use it and if it hasn't been used or the fluids changed it will screw up real quick(break or grind out)

If you are planning to drive it off road get a power winch on the bumper. A winch will get you out of the trouble the 4 wheel drive gets you into.
