An atheist doesn't believe in a deity. An agnostic doubts the existence of a deity. A deist, on the other hand, believes them both to be wrong. It's beginning to sound like a 'shell game' doesn't it?

Those are people that don't know what they're talking about. Atheists do not believe in God whatsoever, period. They don't want or need proof, that's their belief. Kind of like hardcore religious people that disregard facts and science and don't believe in evolution. That's just the way things are. I personally think everyone should be "agnostic", in the sense that nobody on earth truly knows and can't truly know what happens when you die, and what put us all here. Anyone that says they do know is a liar, unfortunately the world is filled with them.

All those people do is slow down the progress of mankind.

Atheists deny the existence of any deity, not just God. Agnostics just "don't know" if there is a God. Agnostics don't necessarily require proof. Most of the ones I know are seeking an answer. Atheists are the ones who want us all to prove everything to them.

Different people use the terms in different ways. Simply put, the ways I use these terms are as follows:

theist: someone who actively believes that a deity or several deities exist.

atheist: someone who actively believes that there is no deity in existence.

agnostic: someone of either a theistic or atheistic point of view, but does not believe it is possible to prove the existence of a diety or several deities one way or the other.

gnostic: someone of either a theistic or atheistic point of view, and believes that it is possible to prove the existence (or lack thereof) of a deity or several deities.

By these definitions, I am an agnostic theist; specifically, I'm a solitary eclectic Wiccan.

You might want to get some nonbiased opinions on the definitions of these terms, though:

agnostic: http://www.religioustolerance.org/agnostic.htm

my husband claims to be athiest because he says there is no way god exists with all this corruption and suffering in the world.

then a few minutes later he says "thank god" or something like that

he is among the many confused atheists in this world who are really just agnostic

btw- what does an agnostic, dyslexic, insomniac do at night?

he lays awake in bed wondering if there really is a dog?

Think about it this way. I can be opposed to a war. I can believe in my heart of hearts that it is completely wrong and that the cost is far too high. If you are for the war and we are debating, I will ask you to "prove" to me that the war is a good idea. Simply asking for proof is not an acknowledgment that it exists. It's simply asking for proof.

By your argument, every dove that debates a hawk is actually a fence-sitter. This is simply not the case.

I consider myself agnostic, and I don't believe in God in the way that most do. I believe that the only God that can rule over me is myself. So I do believe in God. I believe hes me.

dukalink is right. Most religious people don't distinguish between the two terms. Atheists believe there is definitely no higher power, while agnostics are simply admitting they don't know one way or the other.

There is no proof of a god therefore it is safe to be atheist. If you have some send it to me. Oh yeah and I have read the 1,500 year old bible, not really up to date, i'm waiting for the Bush version to come out

Here is an easy way to think of it...An atheist is one who believes there is no God....An agnostic is one who ACTS as if there is no God.
