I've heard about people being able to do this with various kinds of knives, but I've never managed to do it myself--I always end up getting bits of cork in the wine and cutting myself.

Yes with a button cork that you find in a champagne bottles just slide the knife from the bottom of the bottle to the top and hit the base of the cork but you have to do this sharply.
the fiz in the wine may come out though...

It IS possible, but like the above guy said, it's hard. Just use a wine key- they're much easier and you won't cut yourself unless you accidentally cut your finger on the foil.
If you want to be really fancy, use an ah-so. It's a wine opener, but it's basically a handle with two prongs on it. It takes a while to get it down, but it's really impressive if you can open a wine bottle with one! Your friends will think you have mad skills. :)

I guess i can do it these days with my eyes closed!

I should have tried a hundred times, so far. Deep in the wild these are the only drinks that last long! So whenever you guys go on a adventure trip, make sure u carry a bottle or two!!

try a swiss army knife. it has a corkscrew on it
