My family comes from Germany, and we say "Prost" when we toast. (My family is from all over Germany...Berlin, Hamburg, Thuringen, the Black Forest, Munich...all over. And we all say the same thing.)

"Prost" is quite common. It is a derivative of the latin "Prosit" - meaning "May it do well". "Auf X" is also used when one is drinking shots. It has no particular meaning except being a signal that everyone should empty their glasses. Then there is "Zum Wohl", literally translating to "To health/Comfort". "Auf Dich" denotes a toast "To you", and can additionally be used to propose toasts to other persons/objects as in "Auf Deutschland" (To Germany), "Auf die Liebe" (To love) etc etc.

Other than that, some Germans use the French saying "Santè". In any regard, whichever you choose to use out of these, you will have a positive response.

Prost, Prosit and "Zum Wohl" are the most common phrases, but there are a lot others too. But you can`t be wrong with one of the three above, everyone in germany will understand.

My translator says, "Beifall". In Berlin everybody said "prost" pronouced with the long "o" . I don't know if that is spelled correctly. When I was drinking beers at Berlin kneipen (pubs) I didn't worry about proper spelling!

To cheer for somebody like cheerleaders do, these are "Anfeuerungen" or "anfeuern" as a verb.

To cheer on a table, its "Prost" or "Zum Wohl" (not "zum Voll" du volles Schwein :-) )

"Santé" is barely used even if sometimes understood (Wo warst du, im Saarland?).

Anfeuerungen (I don't really know how to pronounce it, but that's how it's spelled).
