Somewhere between Lone Pine and Independence, there are these really cool volcanic fields of petrified ash. They have a little sign indicating the turn off for them. It is really fun to walk on the lava flows and see how it covered everything in it's path. Be careful, it is easy to get lost and become disoriented because it covers everything in sight for as far as you can see.

You can also take a little detour to Mt Whitney in the John Muir wilderness. It is really beautiful to take a short hike.
