This is a serious question that I seek a serious answer for. Please no ridiculous remarks or comments citing racism. This is something that many other people have wondered about and I'm just trying to establish the reason for the passion for b-ball.

Go to he!!, *****! As I explained, it's not a racist question and only an imbecile like you would make an assumption like that.

To clarify, I will break it down further: why are SOME black people OBSESSED with the sport of basketball?

I can't believe so many people got offended by this innocent question. I explained that it wasn't a question motivated by racism or hate but people jump to conclusions and make ignorant assumptions. Open your mind, only a complete and utter moron would be insulted by this question!

jazzie606 and ong jon pretty much have it right.

Basketball is not a 'black' game... it's a city game.

Historically, whatever 'group' of people comprise the majority of inner city populations, also happened to be the dominant players in basketball.

Back in the 1920s and 1930s, the majority of inner city residents were Jewish, Jewish players dominated basketball. As we moved into the 1940s and 1950s, Jews moved out of the inner cities, blacks from the south moved into the inner cities, and basketball was soon dominated by black players.

I remember on an NBC special re: the dominance of blacks in sports, they interviewed a Jewish player from the 1930s, and he said that "we used to say that every Jewish kid was born with a basketball in his hands"... of course, the same was later said about blacks.

But basketball is a city game (don't need much space or equipment to play), and this is why the majority of the best/most exciting players come from big ciites.

Check this out black people, just got game. When we get the rock we move so smooth. We jump and dribble so smoothy I guess it all comes down to rhythm, if u can dance u can dribble, pro-hop, pump fake, mostly anything that deal with basketball. Cuz I know for a fact where I live people play basketball all day. I live in a very very small town in south carolina, and then my house in the country. If you go up my street everyone has a basketball goal. Dang i got 3 in my yard!!! i guess that us black love basketball so much cause we want 2 be da best. When you see Kobe,T-Mac, and Shaq on TV scoring, and seeing how they went from nuthin to something and becoming famous and stuff like that, otha people at home are saying I'm going 2 be like that when I grow up. Even black kindergarteners, if you ask dem what they want to be when they grow up its not going to be, a police officier, or a fire fighter its going to be a BASKETBALL PLAYER!!!

YA HEARD!!!!

not at all a racist question ! TOO MANY ignorant people are too quick to judge others. anyway........ my understanding of this is[ and i been around a while].. is that basketball is a very cheap inner city game; the courts are there all you need is a ball and a cple of buddies.... most inner cities are full of black people, thus they are the ones who play the most... there are reletivle few hocky rinks and baseball fields available in the city as apposed to the suburbs. ive been playing organized baseball since 1956 and have played with very few black ball players... customarily they preffer basketball... hope this answere isnt too racist for anyone..... acctually i couldn't care less... like i said "i been around a while "and if i want to be racist.... i've earned the right!
.... ah , "obsessed"??? well if they play a lot they are sure to get good .. and once you get good at something you tend to "obsess" about it esspecially if there isnt anything else in your life. i think you'll find people who play golf or gamble on sunday football get pretty obsessive also. just that here in the usa we dont have much else to wory about..... you wont see this in the 3rd world were they obsess about food...

Because player in the NBA are good and they are black. So when Blacks started becoming good and playing in the NBA making money it was cool, so other blacks started playing it like any other sport. The reason why Blacks like Basketball it because Blacks could not play and practice any other sport like B-Ball back in the day. Why? Because it one sport you can play by yourself. In the black community their is no football field or soccer field but a hoop. Since their are hoops everywhere and so much time on their hands they play basketball. In the black community good basketball skills are one of the most respected thing you can have and it fun, especially when your good.

P.S in school if you aren't good in anything but basketball then you are very popular.

Two words: Harlem Globetrotters. The class and goodwill that they showed during the 50's and 60's made them the goodwill ambasadors for the world, and the best role models for Blacks in general. Before them, there is nothing documented that indicates that Blacks would have any greater general predisposition for basketball.

I know or have met only about 7 African-Americans in my life. The rest of the blacks here in the U.S. are Americans, having never stepped foot in Africa. My ancestors are from Scotland and Ireland, and I am an American. Maybe one day I can go to Egypt and see if they love basketball enough to move here.

Basketball has always been an inner-city game because it does not require a lot of space to have a court. (as opposed to a baseball field or a football field).
