According to the organisation that teaches languages to American diplomats, the hardest languages for English speakers to learn are Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Arabic in that order. But I've got a degree in Japanese and I'm only a mediocre linguist. The best way to learn a language is to go to the country. My Japanese professor told us that a year in Japan is like studying Japanese at home for 4 years. If a year's student exchange in Japan is impractical, get a language kit from the library (textbook and video) and offer to host a Japanese student with an organisation like the American Field Service. We've hosted for them and they're excellent, but there are several other similar student exchange organisations.

You'll never truly learn Japanese that way. You will absolutely need a teacher and spend actual time in real life on it.

Maybe you could try yahoo chat, japanese chatters online. Or try Karaoke, even you listen on the audio still good to have someone to talk and practice speaking or listening from them.
