Crayola makes terrific markers and finger paints that ONLY work on their special paper. It is called Color Wonder and you can get it at any department store. Kids can't write on their clothes, walls, or anything else! No mess. It's great because you can get it in different themes. 4 year olds don't care if they get something they already have so you really can't go wrong. It's summer-time, so you could get some type of outdoor toy. Good luck, and if your son is old enough, let him help pick out the gift.

Lego!
LegoLegoLego! :D Even if he has some, you can NEVER have too much Lego!
(We're all Legomaniacs in this house...)
Another REALLY COOL toy for that age is the Brio wooden railway. We have literally hundreds of dollars of the Thomas the Tank Engine-themed stuff here, and even my 10-yr-old still likes to design & build the tracks for his little bro & sis. (He plays a little, too; but mainly he builds it & they come!) So, if his parents encourage it, these are both toys with a lot of staying power!

Either a small race car set, or and interctive toy that can be hooked up to a tv. My son has one, that has dvd's with all of his favorite charcter (Dora, Elmo, Sponge bob, etc). OR. . . You can get him a karaoke toy from fisher price, that also hookes up to the tv. The child can sing and dace and see themselves on the television screen. OR. . . Uh-oh gotta go - QUITTING TIMe

My son is about to turn 5, his obsessions last year (at least the ones I was willing to indulge) were, and still are, Lego and rescue heroes. I love the Rescue Heroes by Fisher Price, they are heroes, rescuing people from natural disasters (no "bad" guys, no guns, no violence) and they have careers that children can aspire to be, firefighters, pilots, police, etc.

Get some educational books for him/her. Get a cycle or a pack of big letter word cards. The child will definitely get attracted to nice bright coloured gifts.
