I think that it encourages American kids to drink even more, for sure. I've been with young people in a number of other countries, and while kids surely drink in other countries... there's never the same stigma that comes from the laws and history of drinking laws in America. We want it more because we can't have it. Never when I was abroad did I see kids so crazy to get wasted in such a rush as in America. They're willing to drinking anything, as fast as they can, just to get wasted. I believe that those in other countries because there are fewer big issues about young people drinking, can enjoy alcohol for what it is more....though surely kids in other countries just want to have a good time too. Americans do it just because they aren't supposed to and when they can, it's cool... no matter what it is. The Brits did seem pretty crazy too, but not like that... maybe it's also a cultural thing and how drinking fits in with the family and traditions as well.

You're right, people don't wait that long but they really should -- although I guess I'm a hypocrite for saying that since I started drinking when I was about 14. I wish I'd obeyed the law though and waited, I think I made a lot of alcohol-induced mistakes at far too young an age. And while we're on the subject, I think they driving age definitely needs to be raised...18 would be good, 16-year-olds have no business driving.

I think regardless of what age you set as being "legal" people are going to do whatever they want. Untill People start becoming more responsible there will have to be a age limit. I know in some countries they don't have a drinking age necessarily. But they are very responsible drinkers. Its not the age, its the level of responsiblility.

I have to admit, before I hit 21, I actually drank *more* because it was taboo and dangerous, something I wasn't supposed to be doing. I honestly believe, though, that if the drinking age were lower, I never would have had that experience as I would have already know how much I could drink before becoming too impaired to be of any use.

I think that if the legal age to leave home, fight for your country or get married is 18 then the drinking age should be too.

I do not think that is so old because if u were like 20 or 19 or less than u don't know how to be responcible that is a bad question!
