Do NOT buy from a pet shop as these dogs tend to come from puppy mills. Also, I don't recommend buying from a backyard breeder. Reputable breeders and rescueing are the best choices.
With puppies, you tend to get what you pay for. Buying a puppy that is a bit pricier from a good breeder is usually better than buying a cheaper dog from somebody who bred their dog to the other dog down the street just to have puppies or make a little money. Reputable breeders know what they're doing and have experience in the breed and they probably show their dogs and take better care of them. And if you do get a cheap dog from a some puppy mill or backyard breeder, you may end up spending tons and tons of money for vet bills because you have a very sick and genetically inferior puppy.
They have some dog breed tests to help you decide what breed of dog is best for your type of lifestyle. For example, if you live in an apartment, you certainly do not want a rottie or a an american bulldog.

Here's a great site to read some information about the breeds:
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/purebred.htm
Find some books and do an online search for puppy care. Do searches online for reputable breeders. Or save a life at a rescue organization.
Good luck on finding the perfect puppy. Personally, I think it's mostly about chemistry. The puppy picks you, but do have a good idea on what you're looking for before you go out and pick one. Look for a great temperment.
And do research before purchasing! And a good breeder will help you out and give you tons of useful information and show you the parents so you can see what kind of dog the puppy might turn out to be.

It depends what you want the dog for. As a companion the lab is the best. Easy keeper, loyal, obiedient, won't bite or bark too much. A mutt is often a great dog but you can never be sure what you're getting. Whatever you decide on, get a vet check and get the hips checked if youy get a lab and a guarantee from the breeder because hip problems can't be xrayed the 1st year

I say don't buy at all. Adopt from your SPCA or a local humane society. Not only are mutts less likely to succumb to genetic problems often found in purebreds but they are usually more evenly tempered. Not to mention the fact that puppy farms are terrible, inhumane places that provide the pet stores with unhealthy puppies. There are plenty of dogs needing homes in shelters, so you can be a somewhat picky and still help a dog who would otherwise face being put to sleep.

You need to find a breed that suits your lifestyle and taste. The Purina corporation and others have a neat interview system that helps you find a breed that will meet your needs. Check out their website (www.purinaone.com/dogcare_breed_selector.asp).
Also, I strongly recommend you visit the website of the American Kennel Club and read about buying a dog and becoming a responsible dog owner (http://www.akc.org/future_dog_owner/index.cfm?nav_area=future_dog_owners).
There's nothing wrong with getting a mixed breed; the major advantage of the purebred is that you have a pretty good what size it will be, and what its temperment and other characteristics are apt to be like.

Don't buy a dog...rescue one! I have an ex-racing greyhound and she is the sweetest, most wonderful thing ever. And I didn't have to work very hard at all to train her. If you get a puppy you will really have a lot of work ahead of you! Greyhound adoption is the way to go because you get a wonderful companion and save a life!

no one can tell you whiat is the best dog to buy. You have to make up your own answer to that question. I feel the best dog is the one that you get along with. One that when you are in the room with it, it gets up and goes to you emediately. You will know which dog is best for you when you find it!

This depends on what your life is like. Generally, I like to go down to a nearby shelter to find a dog. First of all you save the animal's life. Second, there isn't a perfect dog breed. More than likely you will be able to find the perfect dog for you. Before choosing a dog, ask to handle it and walk it. After you get your dog, please please please get it fixed and give it lots of love. Abandoned animals need extra love which anyone can give them.
