Yes, Some anti-depressants can cause suicidal tendies. You have to be very careful when taking any kind of medicine. You should consult your Doctor who will prescribe the right anti-depressant that you need.

I think that is mostly crap. I believe that the people who do comit suicide while on these meds had been thinking about suicide before starting the drugs whether anyone else was aware of it or not. If I was having suicidal thoughts I really don't think I would share them... would you??? It's possible that the meds might increase the thoughts or perhaps those folks find that the drugs don't help and just feel the need to end it. Anti depressant drugs are way over prescribed and are given as a quick fix instead of therapy which could probably help alot of people out more than the meds. Try changing some of your habits and the people you hang around and that
might get you feeling better without the drugs. If you are healthy you tend to be happier.

Research is inconclusive. The studies do show that some antidepressants may increase self harm. However persons with major depression are already at a risk for these behaviors...so it is hard to say which is responsible for increased suicidal tendency. The "black box" warnings on antidepressant are geared toward adolescents. I believe Prozac is in the safe range and perhaps Zoloft too. I believe paxil may pose more "risk' I would not consult a primary care practitioner, but rather a mental health professional when choosing this type of medication.
On an anecdotal note I do see many people that are able to function better, and return to their former self.
Wish you well

i have took anti-depressants about most of my adult life...there is some that makes you feel better. and there is some that makes you want to sleep to much..but i think anti-depressants are there to help someone with symptoms such as yours... i do not think they will cause you to commit suicide...sometimes it takes time to adjust to medicine and sometimes it takes time to get a person on the right medicine and dosage for them...the only way you will know is to talk to a doctor or counselor about this and tell them how you feel and also what you have heard...sometimes in the past i think doctors gave medicine that a person might not of really needed.. but i am not a doctor so i cant say that it just i feel i have been given to much medicine before.. and so i cut it down myself...i know the contraversery on prozac but i took it for a long time and i think i felt better... but now i am on a different anti-depressant..and i seem to want to sleep more and i really do not have much will to want to do much except what i have to do..but a lot has happened in my life and i am just plain tired of all the junk that goes on in this world today...so i like staying home, playing on the computer, and working once in a while and watching grandkids....i really would try to talk to someone if you can, and see if you can get help with the way you feel...i hope i helped you with this...

No! In most cases anti depressants are life savers. In any study, anything that occurs is considered a side effect of the drug. If you get the flu, it is a side effect. If the dose isn't accurate and you commit suicide, it a side effect. Don't believe everything you read. YOu can only be helped if you're honest with our mental health practitioner.

Antidepressants have to be monitored by a health professional, and do not work to their full potential for about 2 weeks. If you have any bad thoughts, call the health pro immediately--he or she may need to adjust the doseage, or try another type entirely.
It is usually in children and young teens that antidepressants can work in reverse of the way they are supposed to. You just have to keep in constant contact with your doctor/therapist.
Mine have done wonders for me--before starting them, I didn't even want to get up, shower, shop--do anything that "normal" people do every day.

I even have heard that the main threatening time for heavily depressed is while they start to emerge from their melancholy (possibly because of the fact of their meds), yet are nevertheless heavily unhappy. AA drugs do no longer make you go from depressed to chuffed. They make you go from no longer desirous to do something to having slightly extra motivation to do issues. regrettably that frequently contains suicide tries. rising from a melancholy does not inevitably make the sufferer think of that life is gorgeous, and it does not magically provide you the skills to guard life. various cases the melancholy has brought about different problems like unemployment or social isolation, and those problems are nevertheless there while the melancholy starts to circulate away. basically now the sufferer sees what a multitude he's in and feels it extra acutely.

I can honestly say that my anti-depressants have saved my life. I still sometimes feel down, but they totally take the edge off that all the time empty, hopeless feeling. i would reccommend talking to your doctor about them. They're worth it.
