I know it's contagious from person to person, but where does it come from originally. (I know it's not an actual worm.)

Ringworm is a fungus infection and can be transmitted from person to person, or you can get it from domestic animals that are infected (cats, dogs). It looks just like it sounds: makes an itchy patch in a circle on the skin. It's easy to treat and you don't get it from mud puddles. But you can get hook worms from walking barefoot in infected areas (where there is feces). Hope this helps.

I don't know about ringworm, but my horse just got a fungus type thing called "Scratches" (that's in Veterinary terms, I don't know if people can get it or if it is called something else) and he got that because it's really muddy where I live right now. So maybe you can get some sort of fungus/infection from playing in mudpuddles, but I don't know about ringworm.

There are tiny worms in the dirt/mud that gets into your skin of foot and live in your body. Don't walk barefeet.

No, it's a fungus that thrives in warm sweaty/moist areas (wrestling mats, showers if not cleaned, etc.), not in puddles.

Fungus infection. You get it from someone else who has it, contact with you, or the floor.
