College is something I cant do right this moment, maybe in a year or 2, but what else can I do to help better my chances of becoming a police officer.

I think being an MP in the military would help me greatly, getting training similar to what a recruit goes through in the police academy, and getting in shape. The problem is some people tell me this is a great idea, while others say it is a waste of 3 years of my life, and I am 28.

PLEASE HELP!

You do NOT have to have a college degree to become a cop. A lot of agencies prefer them, but there are several cops who actually get their degree while they are cops.

The MP is a good thing, but not the only thing you can do. I'd suggest some of the vocational schools who offer some training in criminal justice. That can help give you a background on how to look at the law etc.

Finally, go to different agencies and ask them. Some will pay for you to attend the academy. If you have the money, you can go to the academy on your own and then have that under your belt and hope for an agency to pick you up.

Best of luck, and if you are successful - BE SAFE!.

You Do Not have to have a college degree to become a police officer. There are many people who have that misconception. Does it help? Sure it does. The qualifications for becoming a police officer are fairly simple. Most smaller towns require you to already be a liscensed peace officer before they will hire you, but larger cities will pay you as you go through their academy. After the training you are required to do on the job training. But you are a police officer none the less. It is a simpler way for those who cant afford college to get into law enforcement. Dont let anybody tell you you have to have a college degree to become a police officer because it simply is not true. A lot of agencies, after you become an officer, will pay for your continuing education so you can obtain a degree.

In my county, you don't have to have a college degree to go through the police academy. It is probably an 8 month course. I'm not sure of the time frame for it. But upon completion, you would be eligible to be a deputy sheriff or police officer. Check in your area if you have to have a degree to become a law enforcement officer. I can tell you, though, that without that degree (either 2 or 4 yr college) you will not receive many promotions.

In some cities or counties all that is required is you having to pass their police academy. In others it is required to have collage or some type of Military service/education to be accepted. You need to contact the department you are interested in joining and ask what the requirements are for employment

you don't need college though it will help you. You can take reserve officer classes at an adult school or vocational college. Joining the military to get experience is not the answer unless you want to join the military. Just apply at a department and speak to a recruiter, they can offer you advise also.
Good luck
