In the early 1800s, Mount Krakatoa exploded and emitted millions of tons of ash into the atmosphere. The ash caused the sunlight to be obscured to some degree and cause darker sunsets. A scientific theory is that volcanic activity may have caused the mini ice age of the middle ages and studies have found volcanic ash in layers of snow that would be from that period. Another theory has it that some cataclysm caused immense widespread volcanic activity that brought on the ice age that killed the dinosuars. You can see from these theories and the Krakatoa explosion that volcanic activity has worldwide weather effects and might cause an abrupt and drastic change in all areas of life on the planet.

well, for starters, certainly the volcanic ash they spew into the air can cause respiratory problems in people - probably pets and wild animals too...and ash that lingers in the air and settles on plants blocks sunlight and inhibits photosynthesis.
