...in exchange for the right to apply for legal citizenship.
What is more fair than that to both parties? Get used to paying for stuff i you want to come here, cuz here in the USA that's what we do. We Pay! If you come here, one way or the other, you will have to pay too.
What's being here and having this opportunity worth to you all out there that are either illegal or want to support illegals?

As most of you who are astute enought to say and see, the damage has been done. It will not be possible for us to recoupe our losses by taxing or penalty fee. However, if we "tax" them "specially" for their infractions/illegal entry as they stay here and work ...it won't be worth being here for. Or it will. God bless them if they are that hungry for work and $$$$ and a better life. This approach will call their hand and we will see if we are being "terrorized" by people who want to overthrow us, or simply patronized because we are such a land of opportunity. Most answeres were quite good!

First and foremost.... these people DO NOT WANT TO BECOME CITIZENS. Therefore, they will not join up to pay taxes, etc. They will just continue to send $$$ home to Mexico. Bush and company assume they want to be citizens, but I have not heard any of the illegals say that. Just that they are "taking over". Send them all back. No special treatment or deals.

I agree they should pay back taxes.

here is something I thought up......
you remember the three tier system they thought of a while back. where the illegals that have stayed here less than 2years have to be deported and the 2-5(I think) years have to be deported but get a workers permit. And the ones who have stayed over 5 years get citizenship. Well I believe that idea got thrown out due to the high risk of fraud. But in a way we could use that as a sort of documentation I mean I don't care if they haven't really been here 5 years, because they will end up paying 5 years of back taxes. And I believe that an estimated 4 million illegal immigrants have been here over 5 years. Think about it 4 million possibly more people paying 5 years of back taxes. Sounds like a lot of green to me.

I dunno its probably a stupid idea but I thought I'd mention it.

I don't think the illegals really want to become citizens. if you really want to become a citizen one of the worst things you can do is to start off breaking laws by sneaking in illegally. Their purpose is to make as much as they can and send it all back to Mexico and then get out without paying taxes. How would you determine back taxes anyway? There is no way to determine what their back taxes would be. You would have to come up with an arbitrary number as a penalty, whether it be $10,000, $20,000, or $50,000 that an illegal would have to pay in exchange for the right to apply for citizenship. I don't think any of them would be interested in paying a dime.

I don't think it will work to try to force them to pay back taxes because they will just falsify their information and lie to avoid paying. If there was a way of forcing them to do it, I would be all for it, but I don't think there is. I agree with most of the posts in answer to your question here and I really think they should just be deported, all of them, and forced to start over again the legal way. I also don't believe most of them want US citizenship or even to be in the US legally - they would prefer to continue to be allowed to work under the table or with fake/stolen ID so they don't pay taxes and deductions and still have lots of money to send back home. I believe that most of them never intended on staying in the US forever - just to work and send as much money home as possible so they can eventually return home to retire in relative luxury (US $ do go a lot further in Mexico/Central America). I think, however, that illegal immigrants from countries other than Mexico/Central America may be more inclined to want the US citizenship than the Mexican/Central Americans do and so they may be the ones more likely to accept any offer the US government ends up giving to them in order to stay in the US on "a path to Citizenship."

Because they would never collect. The only transaction that I know of that carried you to the grave is a student loan by the guy that lost the supremem court case where he couldn't live off his meager social security of like $600 a month.

Mybabydestiny, if you had an email i would send you the information. No, they don't all want to become citizens, they want to colonize and reclaim states oth as citizens and illegaly. I don't have to be on the border to see what's going on, I can give you alot of information on how that is working out for them.

They did not make enough money to pay BACK taxes! What they did make was spent on bills, and sending to relatives in Mexico. I could see it if, to become a citizen, the person would have to START paying taxes--but forget about BACK taxes.

When they become citizens, they will get a Social Security number, and will have to make (at least) the minimum wage--which many illegals do not make. Then, they can start paying Social Security and taxes.

Well, if they are applying LEGALLY, then the fees and medical checkups etc. will have to be paid for as Pancha says ... but if they are here already, working and taking advantage of the social security and getting paid under the table, or with false documentation, then of course they should have to pay for it ... any reason why they shouldn't? In the case of document fraud, there should be HEFTY fines, if not jail and deportation! Let me tell you, an American citizen wouldn't get away with it scot free ....

Because they are working under fake Social security numbers that their companies give them, they are contributing to taxes and social security already.
Just like a Republican plan - make them pay twice for the same services and insult them, too.

after illegal immigrants get a job, they DO pay taxes and the government doesn't reject THAT! they happily accept it. they're taxes are legal but they aren't?? i know more "legal/american" people who get paid "UNDER THE TABLE" and don't pay taxes than "illegal" immigrants who mostly work everyday, and pay just as much taxes as everybody else. whatever.
