lack of self esteem
you can be poor or rich, any race and any sex...smart or dumb...happy or sad...
but if you care about your mind and body, you will not want to be a sucker for peer pressure and you do not want to be a follower and you do not want to hurt your brain or take a chance of getting into trouble with the law.....it's just like getting into sex at an early age...or cigaretts or gangs....whatever.....
my kids were always told they were good inside and they were to be true to themselves and love themselves when no one else did. none of them went to drugs or sex or any other vices that kids use for acceptance because they were acceptable to themselves...they were the trend setters. we lived in apartments called "The Halls of Hell" in Marina California, and we lived in Seaside when it was bad in the 1990's...there was plenty of drugs and prostitution...we were not rich and we were not living in a white community though we were white. our friends were the people who lived near us and cared about us and there was no problems with anyone over race or money.
No one faults you for making your own choices and it is cool no matter where you live to want to be clean. Judgeing others is what kills people and trying to say the choices others make are bad or wrong..this is what makes enemies and causes anger and hatred. my kids accept people because they know everyone tries to be happy and do what is right, some people can't because they are not in the right mind set or place in their life. We need to stop punishing others and love eachother and the world will be a better place for many people and then drugs will lose their temptation. teen pregnancy and all the things kids use to find love will fade because they don't want a hard life, sometimes it is the only way they know.
There are many people who know anger and hate but do not know love. You gotta feel love to know how to love yourself and others. If your parents don't give it to you...maybe a friend or neibor will. be that person for someone.

It is not social values that factor in for the use of drugs, it is stupidity, ignorance, and a woeful desire to ruin oneself. People of all walks of life with no brains in their head will try drugs." I won't get addicted",(denial); " I know what I'm doing",( ignorance), ; " I didn't know what it was", (stupidity). Come on now, I used to get drung, alot, but I never drank poison or tried to eat a hot coal. Don't label a user by social values, they come in all sizes and shapes, rich or poor, with or without families.
