He's tested the animal, he wants me to give her the pill every month, but won't let me buy it anywhere other than from him.

It is heatworm medication (Heartgard). The dog had heartworm, and she received treatment at his office (took several weeks and lots of $$$). She was cleared as "Heartworm Free." I live in Texas. Some vets will write perscriptions if you ask, some wont. Seems highly unethical, can you imagine if your personal doctor perscribed meds to you AND required you buy them from him?
Thanks folks.

It would be state law which would control this. Ask them to put this policy in writing. If they refuse, it's probably illegal.

Actually there are some states where they can do that and some that require the vet to give you a scritp if you ask. I live in NY and the vet has to give you the script if you ask so you can get it where you want. You can do an online search to find the states that require them to write one for you, but if you are in the other side...you may have no choice but to buy from them.

Tell me what state and I will look it up for you.

Texas is a NO state. There is no law that requires a vet to write you a script. It is left up to the individual vet. It is legal for him to refuse to write you one. You can call around and see if other vets will write you one and switch. It sucks whaen they mark medications like that up so much you have to decide weather you can put your dog on them. There are places to get them cheaper, but your vet won't comply. That is really too bad!! Sorry.

Contact the State Veterinary Board- but if it for something like heart worm and your pet has been tested and cleared then just go to another vet and have them call for the info and buy the meds there. If it another type of medication like thyroid meds -no he cannot refuse you a prescription but can charge you to write you one.And if it is a control Drug he may be able to do that because of the fact it is a narcotic.

Sounds like it's legal but it's certainly cheesy behavior. I'd consider another vet if you have other options nearby.

I one time asked my vet to do this for me too, but they took it one better and they give me a price match on Heartgard and Frontline. I just have to show them the catalog price of the cheapest one I can find and they give me the price of the catalog (including shipping). This lets me buy through my vet but at the cheaper price.

Sounds a bit dodgey don't you think? Whats the pill for? Can you not go to another vet? Is it cheaper for the prescription?

Yes, I believe it is illegal in most states. He must write you a prescription if you ask for one.

If you went to another vet would they say them same thing?

Maybe he wants to make sure you get the medication.
