I am proud to be American but its hard to brag about it when so many people have shown how little they care by not learning our language properly. Franks and Beans!!!

You would be better served correcting your own grammar than throwing stones at others. Re-read your rant....

English is one of the most neglected languages in the world. While its popularity never stops increasing, the standards of teaching keep dropping. It is now the de facto language of the internet, which means that routine typing errors are becoming Webster-standard words. And nobody bothers to proof anything.

I try to lead by example, just because I don't have a better plan.

Because of the overpaid school teachers in our public school system. They all need to be fired, the teachers unions done away with, and new, non union teachers hired. If they don't perform, they can be fired with no union backing them up. These teachers are all a bunch of over paid cry babies getting full time wages and full time benefits for doing part time work and a pathetic job of it at that. The grammar, spelling, etc. on this site proves it. FIRE THEM ALL AND GET RID OF THE TEACHERS UNIONS.

I agree that the language and spelling sometimes is atrocious but some of the comments are correct. Young kids post, non-English natives post, sometimes it is obvious the person is using slang or what I would call "quick-write". What bothers me more is the comments/attitude of Jennie A. You obviously have a grudge to air or a chip on your shoulder to attack ALL teachers that way. May I inquire as to whether you are a teacher or going to school to be a teacher? If not, perhaps you should stop bashing teachers as all incompetent. To say that we don't teach is downright ridiculous. I teach in the inner city and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't come home exhausted from dealing with and trying to teach a bunch of kids who don't care anything about getting an education and neither do their parents.

Work part-time? I get paid for 7.25 hours a day. I work an average of 10. Over-paid? I spend nearly $1,000 of my own money every year to purchase materials my school system doesn't provide including paper. The students frequently don't bring their own pencils or paper so I have to supply it or they don't have a way to work. A friend of mine has the same level of education in a different field and makes twice what I do. Uneducated? I am expected to attend 20 hours of inservice workshops every year, most on my own time. The state requires me to get continuing education credits at my own expense. Have you priced college credits lately? Locally, they run about $150.PER HOUR. That's about $500 for one class. I have a master's degree and still have to take classes just to keep my job and I have to pay for them. My principal just asked us to attend a retreat in July before school resumes (we are a modified year-round) AT OUR OWN EXPENSE. She also wants us to go on a cruise in Oct. with half the days for inservices AT OUR OWN EXPENSE. The past 3 years, she has selected teachers to go to training in different parts of the country. She paid for the workshops, but the teachers had to go on their own time. They had to pay up front and she would reimburse them. Unfortunately, some people didn't get their money back.

As for not teaching, do you have any idea of how much we are expected to cram in a year? I have a copy of my old 3rd grade English book. I taught the same skills when I taught 2nd grade 10 years ago. Kindergarten used to be for learning the alphabet, numbers, colors and how to play nicely and share. Now, teachers are expected to have them reading, doing addition and subtraction, learning science and social studies. Many no longer have recess and there are no more milk and cookie breaks. The past year, I taught algebra and geometry problems to 6th graders that I know I didn't have until high school.

Don't ask me why I do it. I gave up a long time ago trying to figure out why I should go through all this when so many people have the same attitude you have.

If you are so sure teachers are doing it wrong, why don't you volunteer to come teach my class (or anyone else's). Most community volunteers and visitors to our school say they wouldn' t have our job if it paid double.

Does it really even matter? Some people type too fast to even realize that they did mispell..or they just type..cuz wut etc.... because that is how they want to spell. What is annoying is the people that have to point it out and make such a big deal out of nothing. This is not a language or spelling contest. This is what makes America so great.....freedom to basically do whatever you want!! IMO

People spell incorrectly on this site because we are here to have fun. This site isn't meant to be 100% accurate on spelling and people are allowed to have their own views regardless of sex, nationality, religion, or disability. We live in America, if you dont like the way we type then maybe you should move to another nation without freedom of speech. Then you could take about spelling in prison.

A lot for people like to use slang, they think it looks better. It has nothing to do with being American, everyone does it. I think the spell check should be used a lot more then what it is been. In todays world everything is high paced and everyone trys to rush everything.

It has nothing to do with being a proud American, that's just arrogance, or being stupid and not taught right. People just keep like to type quickly. It's much easier to type "b/c" than spell it out. Other people that type cuz or coz and dunno, etc. just do that b/c they may talk like that and it's comfortable to them.

Plus, this is just Yahoo! Answers, a web-site!!! It's not a english paper or a report/evaluation for a business...just a website. Get over it!!!

I don't think it really has much to do with being American. There are so many young people from all over the world here, and I'm guessing maybe they haven't taken spelling yet? LOL

Lots of little kids and foreigners post here. Also, the schools are not doing a good job of teaching English these days. It is taught 'holistically' which is a fancy way of saying 'very little.'
