don't know how poor you are, but sony cybershot is pretty good. that's the one i have. not that expensive either.

Get the Canon S series. Like the S50 or S60. They are a year or more older models but solid and take amazing pictures and come with very advanced options including manual option. And they are built solid like a rock.

go for a kodak it has various models and the company specialises in cameras .............
