I have a mama-cat that nursed for almost 5 months. The vet just said "What a good mommy she is". It won't hurt either of them, and it's probably as much a bonding activity as anything else. Unless you plan to rehome the kitten, I would leave them be. If you DO have to wean the baby, if mommy isn't doing it herself you may have to keep them in separate rooms for a few days so the milk will dry up. Normally once the kitten is "biting" too hard during nursing, mommy decides she's had enough. Of course, since she "adopted" a kitten, she may instinctively feel the kitten needs to nurse longer. Kittens learn a great deal from their mommy-cats. I'd just let them enjoy it as long as they choose to unless there is a reason not to.

I too, have a cat that we recently adopted. I'm assuming he was about 2 months old. He automatically took to one of my females that has never had kittens, but she's always helped take care of all the kittens I've had. All kittens have sucked on her. I really don't think she has any milk. It's just comforting for her and the kitten evidently.
I have also had real mommies feed their kittens 6 months or more. They are definitely eating cat food. I think the nursing on mom is just something that makes them feel safe. Kinda like a baby not wanting to give up his bottle. They don't want to give up their security blanket.

It will not hurt the cat. She probably does not have any milk now, but enjoys letting the kitten "nurse". I had a poodle once that adopted 3 nine week old kittens and fed them until they were close to 3 months old. Oh and the poodle had never had pups before. The kittens started nursing on her and her milk came down and she nursed them.

Ask your vet about weaning your kittens, the vet is the professional. It is fairly normal for cats to still be nursing occasionally at 12 weeks (3 months) and many vets recommend not weaning until 12 weeks of age now. Your cat is protective of her kittens because that is normal mothering behaviour for mammals. You should still be able to adopt them out soon, but check with your vet first.

That's normal don't worry about it. Just make sure the kitten knows where to get the other food. Every once and a while pick her up and take her to the food dish.
