What are the benifits to becoming a notary?

In certain occupations it is necessary for you to be a notary public (IE. car dealers use notaries, court clerks, etc.). Notaries are used when a signature needs to be certified as genuine. Most commonly used for the transfer of ownership of property or affirmation by the signature holder.

In my job as a bail bond agent, it is not necessary but very helpful to have a notary license since we must file quit claim deeds and other legal documents.

It is also an additional (but small) source of income. You can only charge a fixed amount for each signature. The fee varies from state to state. It may be helpful to you if you are working in a field where this would be useful.

I gave mine up last year. Every nutty friend or family member wanted some signature or car title notarized without the person there. I told them this is illegal but they all went away mad - I did not trust them. In NC, $2 a signature - none of which I collected - since I was only a notary for my accounting job. If you decide to, be a closet notary - tell no one unless you have too! (lol)

We can not marry anyone legally as notaries - better check your state - we had classes at community college, we had to attend & pass final test.

I don’t see why anyone would want to be a Notary. I would not want the responsibility that I unknowingly notarized a Grant Deed or some other important document and later found out that a impersonator had shown me forged identification. As a Notary, you are responsible.

You are an officer of the court. You can make easy money all you need to do is stamp papers. And if you are a really top dog Notary you can even enforce judgements with a notary protest.

Lots of people need documents notarized. You can charge for this service. You have the authority to marry couples. That is fun and profitable. But mostly, your friends get all of their kids camp forms notarized for free (by you), then you have to go pay another notary to do yours........ That is why I let mine lapse.

I don't know of any who charge $20. I do know around here, they charge about $3. Probably not a good way to make some extra cash. Got anything you could sell on eBay? Or maybe at a flea market? Just a couple of ideas.

It is a relatively easy process to become one, it is helpful to your career if you work in a bank, real estate or handle large transactions, and just having it is a plus when you are doing business. It is a big help to have that license on your resume.
