because they are lost
The Atheist position is indeed hopeless. The believer has hope. If there is a God and there is life after death then the believer wins. If there is no God or no life after death the believer loses nothing. On the other hand, the Atheist loses badly if he wakes up to discover himself in the afterlife. In sum, if there is no afterlife both the believer and the Atheist are safe. But if there is an afterlife then the Atheist loses. The only one who can possibly lose is the Atheist.

You really should read your own questions:
"where would we be? Who would have created us? Where would life be?"
Those questions are the REASON you believe in god. Just because you don't know the answer to a question doesn't mean to have to create an answer. Humans used to think god was responsible for lightning and thunder, but, science have now proven that theory wrong. Just because there is an unknown doesn't mean "god must have done it". Making up an explanation for the things we don't know or don't understand is silly, dangerous, and ignorant.
There are people that rather wait for the truth or never know the answer than to make one up. That is one reason of many that people don't believe in god.

Just because you read a book that says there is a God doesn't make it fact, i read the Lord of the rings but that doesn't mean that i am going to run into Hobbits any day soon.
As for who created us, it is called natural selection. Through evolution the modern human was the one specie of the many that develop from a common humanoid ancestor to survive the various changes that have occurred over millions of years.
And here we sit today technologically advanced, but yet still immature in our handling of the world around us.

the moon is round, true
some people only have seen half moon
to them the ultimate truth is half moon
if you believe in this thing you call god, show me where to see him,
i believe the moon is half round,
if you look up at the sky in two weeks from half moon you shall see
please, where do i look to see god
if you say the trees i say its a tree
if you say a babies face i say thats a babys face
if you say the bible i will show you its a work of man, and can give you a long lists of books that say so,
or will you say the moon is half full and that the books ive read to suggest that the bible is not the work of god is the work of satan
see what i mean

If there was no God, we'd still be who we are, no one will have created us and life would be as it is.
Thing is, God can not be proven or disproven. Some folks see the evidence as pointing to no God. That's ok. That's their path. I don't think it's stupid.

Way down deep inside, "There is no God" means, "I need there to be God!"
It originates in a deep-seated loneliness, which is bred and incubated in fear: afraid there really is no God, or terrified that the Old Testament god does exist.

the statement that there is no God is erroneous, there is neither proof for or against the existence of God.
Given the lack of proof, it all comes down to faith, and what you believe. Through out recorded history, people have been claiming the existence of god, without making the distinction between fact and belief, and often using "circular logic" to defend their claim.
Most people take have no problem with the idea of a god, but the dirrect assertion of fact without proof is troubling, and even indicates a low intelligence on the part of claiment.
i.e. John has an imaginary friend, Bob, he believes that Bob controls the world and frequently tells Ruth that this is so. Ruth can neither see nor hear Bob and so she gets very annoyed at John for constantly telling her that she should bow to Bob.
Ruth tells john that there is no Bob.
John gets very upset and considers to Ruth to be persucuting him.
This whole circumstance could have been easily avoided if John had told Ruth that HE BELIEVED his friend controlled the world. and that Ruth was free to believe otherwise.
Ruth would probably have been perfectly fine with John having an imaginary friend, but when John started forcing his ideas on her, she got very upset.
This example is very similar to the history of the conflict between Religous people and non religious people. For the most part, non religious folks dont believe that God Doesn't exist, merely that there is no proof for the case in either way. The only time they will actively strive to prove that there is no god, is if someone actively tries to tell them that there is.
Atheism is the belief that there is no god
Agnosticism is the belief that God is Unknowable or unprovable.
Most people who call them selves atheists are actually agnostics.
Some atheists have had bad experiences with orginised religion and that has lead them to distrust religious types and religion in general (you have to admit, religion has a pretty bad track record in regard to violence and persecution done in the name of God)
And still others take the lack of proof for god as proof for the absence of god, this logic is as flawed as the circular logic they are trying to counter. but it is an understandable stand point (we have no evidence for blue elephants, so we can assume there are none)
I myself am a deist, i believe that there is a God, but that by the very nature of God it is is infinite, and given the finite nature of humans, we are unable to know or comprehend God.
I believe in the scientific history of the universe, and know that at some point everything came from nothing, and although quantum physics allows for the random creation of something for nothing, i still believe that the fundamental "settings" of the universe (atomic wight, the strength of gravity, the speed of light) are not arbitrary or random. I have no proof for this and am happy to say so. I still consider it more likely than not that there was an original creative force, I also believe in cosmic conciousness and the collective unconcious (more possible aspects of God), but that is material for a whole other rant.
So to summarise, the scientific proof for evolution is unshakeable, if you doubt this then doubt everything around you, for all of our technology is built around the same principles and methods wich tell us the history of the universe.
There is no direct PROOF for or against God.
It is only ever your personal BELIEF
there is room in science for God, but there is also room for there not to be God.
Allways preface all statement about God as "your belief", only then can you have a point of arguement agaisnt those who claim the absence of God as fact, for that claim is only "their belief"
allow others to believe whatever they want, or else you can not expect them to do the same for you.

you have no right to call people stupid for not believing the same thing. it is up to them to believe whatever they want. religion is a personal matter. it's between the individual and god. no one else can interfere or make a judgment about it. and plus, it all comes back to faith. whether these people have it or not... it's there choice to believe.

That's really easy.
Ever thought about the Devil?
He is the one that makes people believe that there is no god.Same thing with him.The biggest trick of the Devil is to make people believe that he does not exist.
