It wasn't a sin it is called a transgression because Adam faced a paradox. He was commanded by God to multiply and replenish the earth with Eve, yet he was also commanded not to partake of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, other wise known as the ability to reproduce. He had to partake in order to obey the first commandment to multiply and replenish the earth, but in doing so he broke the 2nd commandment which is why they call it Adam's transgression.

the sin wasn't what people think it was, everyone seems to have missed the point. it is what Jesus said in his preaching. the sin was this. When God asked Adam why he ate from the tree, he blames eve, then eve, blamed the serpent. The sin wasn't the fruit it was pointing the finger at someone Else's sin and denying ones own responsibility.
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
Why has history missed this point? because the other interpretation allows false profits or con artists or preists to point there fingers at the other tribes and cultures and gain profit and power. Building egos by telling people its ok to judge others. No one then looks at the log in there own eyes so everyone is blind. Generals have toys to play with.

As you can see....many of our Christian friends has basically the same belief by writing "because God told them not to eat" and because they did eat, they sinned.

Although God was angry with them for being disobedient, I believe that their disobedience was just a small part of Gods anger and disappointment in Adam.
Just so the facts are straight..... If you read the scripture in Genesis, you will see that God told Adam (not Eve), not to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil. The serpent deceived Eve (not Adam) to eat the fruit. But it was Eve that gave Adam the fruit to eat, not the serpent(devil). And although God was angry at Adam for eating the fruit, he was much more angry that Adam lost something given to him by God himself.

But your question only asked why it was a sin to eat the fruit.

God commanded Adam not to eat the fruit.... Adam told Eve what God told him. Eve was deceived to eat and ultimately Adam ate because Eve gave him the fruit which God told him not to eat..... So they sinned by breaking the first law given to mankind.

And if you want to know more, ask and it will be revealed.

Well, I'm sure you've heard of the "Knowledge is power" expression. And power is usually associated with evil. People with vast knowledge can easily use it to their advantage and become evil in their doings. I'm not a Christian or Catholic or whatever, that's just basically how I see it. Knowledge is dangerous.

god told them not to do so. he was not depriving them of anything because they had the entire paradise to themselves. it was one tree out of many. Adam and eve, being perfect and deliberately disobeying God, severely sinned against him.
edit:
sparky, you are correct about knowledge, however, they did not receive knowledge about good and evil after eating it, did they?
nope! it was a symbol of God's sovereignty, or his right to rule over them, telling them what is good and evil.

God gave specific instructions to both Adam and Eve that they could eat from any tree in the garden except that one and they went ahead and disobeyed.

Because God told them not to. Seems like a good enough reason. He's God, after all!

I think the point was to show that humans always had such curiosity that even God couldn't stop them from exploring.

God told them not to, but instead of listening, they gave in to satan and accepted the quick satisfaction he gives us when we give in to our lusts. You have to obey God to love Him,when you rebel, its considered a sin.
