Need basic info on how microsoft office works and need to know about power point and window xp and spread sheet and what is it for.

From there, you can click on links to find more detailed information on the different components of Office. In summary:

Word - word processing software, used to create documents (resumes, letters, invoices, etc.)
Excel - spreadsheet, used for number-crunching
Access - database, used for creating a system to store and manage information
PowerPoint - presentation graphics, used in conjunction with presentations, displays information on a screen in a slideshow fashion
Outlook - calendar and communications, used for keeping track of important dates and contacts
Publisher - used for creating marketing materials (brochures, flyers, business cards), more specialized than Word

Not all versions of Office come with all of the above programs. The Office website goes into what each version comes with and offers some pricing information as well.
