Hey there...I am a "Mormon" and having read these answers...I can't tell you if I am coming or going. Some info is correct, some is misinterpreted, some is just TOO much.

Go to www.lds.org, or look in your phone directory for "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints". Call one of the numbers Sunday morning...(best time)...and someone there will be glad to hook you up with someone who can assist you a little more clearer.

We do believe in Jesus Christ and his teachings. We are not a cult. We are Christians. The best thing to me, is that no matter where you go in the world, you will be taught the SAME message as another place in the world...with local scheduling leway. It may be taught differently, but it is the SAME message.

(Whereas, in some religions, the message is different from one side of town to the next.)

Remember also, not to judge others by their religion. I have attended LDS churches where the members weren't so nice, but I have also attended churches where the members would give you the shirt off their back.

It is the message that you must follow...not the person.

Have fun investigating. Thank you for asking an excellent question.

Now, would you like a real answer??
Mormons are also called the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. They are no more a cult than the Lutherans, who broke from the Roman Catholic Church. They were persecuted in Illinois and proceeded by wagon train to Utah where they settled. Their beliefs are quite similar to other Christian beliefs but they have a highly organized structure that helped them survive the long trek across the United States. This involves a strong emphasis on family, worship, ethics and community. If you are a Mormon and lose your job, you don't have to worry about going hungry, as they have a welfare society that provides food and clothing. This is possible because they also believe in tithing 10% of whatever income you have to the Church, and because of volunteers active in the church who visit the sick & elderly and assist with canning and preparing food. The church becomes the social activity for most families and allow music and dance, in fact encourage it. All young men at the age of 18 are called to a 2 year mission away from home in the US or another country, where they are sent in pairs and help the churches in that area, and proselytize. For this service, they have the opportunity to attend Brigham Young University. Mormons believe that if you are married in a Mormon temple you are joined not only for life but for all eternity. They also believe in geneology, that by prayer you can assist those who have died to achieve heaven. They wear special undergarments that are sanctified. Also, their children become another vehicle for souls to reach heaven, so they tend to large families.
I am not Mormon, but have family that are. This is just my understanding; someone sho is Mormon could answer you better and correct my misunderstandings. I don't agree with all their beliefs, but I honor their right to them (without being called a 'cult') and I honor how they care for one another and walk the talk, their ethics.
It is a fascinating history and worth reading about.

Mormons are just another Christian group. Just like the Catholics or Lutherans. MOst of us believe that a man named Joseph Smith talked to God in the 1800's and some other stuff i cant remember. we get a lot of crap from other people because in the 1800's, a group of us went to Utah to practice our religion alone to try to create a Utopia and we preacticed polygamy. Nowadays, the church frowns on that, but people still haggle us about it. Mormons are not bad people like some people seem to think. It's just another religion.

Is asking what a mormon is a geneological question? Isn't it more about religion?

You should consider yourself lucky that you didn't know what a Mormon is. I was born into it, so I had no choice.
