I have to do a speech in my public speaking class on a controversial issue. We have to present both sides, for and against. So what does everyone think? Any input would be great. Thanks!

Home schooled kids often outperform kids from public schools. Having said that the parents have to dedicate a LOT of time in order to do it right.

I think if the parents don't have the time to devote to home schooling they can do more harm than good.

In addition of course there is the arguement that homeschooled kids often fail to learn social skills that come with a mainstream education.

In short it is one of those things that can't be done "half assed". It involves total committment or its best to let the kids to go public or private schools.

I think homeschoolinging is a great idea if the child has a lot of interactions with other children. Usually people who homeschool join other homeschooling groups and meet several times a week. The people I know who have been homeschooled are very smart. They don't "fall through the cracks" like some children who go through the public school system. It also helps develop better relations with children and their parents.

The only downfall to homeschooling is that children often have less experience with others their age. They have a harder time adjusting socially later in life. I have one friend who was homeschooled. She is very smart, a great writer and musician, but has difficulty when with a group of people. One on one she is fine, but in a group she is very quiet. Some of the younger children I have met who are homeschooled are very much like this as well. Good luck with your speech!

Well, as a home schooled graduate, I say yes. Just make sure that the children are still involved with children through other arenas...like sports, church, playgroups, etc.

BTW, I went to public school as well. Personally, I liked being able to do my school work at a faster pace. I was able to graduate early, get a job, even buy a car because I was homeschooled (the car because I was able to get a day job that I wouldn't have had had I been in school...did schoolwork at night when parents were home). It basically tought be resposibility.

Yes and no. Yes if the parent is educated themselves, has a very well structured home and involves the children in sports or other group activities. No, if the above does not exist and/or there is a learning challenge or other issue that the parent is not trained to cope with.

I think it really depends on why someone is homeschooling.
Most of the people I know personally who homeschool do it for religious reasons. I don't mean to bash anyone who does it for those reasons, I'm just speaking about what I have witnessed myself personally. But most of the people I know who homeschool for religious reasons also tend to limit ALL social interactions and activities of their kids, so these kids don't get much "real world" knowledge.
Socialization for kids is still very important for all kids. I know..I used to teach pre-school.

I don't think so. Home school leaves little time for interaction with other kids and an education in a public or private school cannot compare to that of a home schooling education.

personally i think that children should go to school where there are other children thier age so they could have friends and be social and be around the other children. i think its ok to be homeschooled if the kid was in high school and didnt like it.

i loved home schooling! social life in school,NOT,you cant talk to the kid next to you,you get 1/2 hour lunch(social time) homeschoolers can take their time doing work, they can advance where needed and this gives them oppurtunities to volunteer, help neighbors, learn to manage time, become involved with scouts,YMCA,music classes,it is a great experience, robin
