My mother and I scrap all the time about which horse was better. She maintains that Secretariat still holds the record for a mile and a quarter, but he was on steroids. Man O'War raced 21 times in his short career, won twenty of them and came in second just once. (Damn that Upset.) Plus, he never ran the Derby because his owner didn't want to push him so hard so early in the season. Also, tracks are a lot faster now than in 1918 (1920? I can't remember.) So, please help! Who here thinks Man O'War is the better horse by far? Look what he did to Sir Barton?!

The Australian wonderhorse PharLap would have beaten them both, even hardened US racing men placed him above Man O War after he won the Agua Caliente Hcp the richest race in the world at that time on a limited preperation and with a hoof injury and his first run on dirt after a long sea voyage, sadly he died after this race more than likely from poison used to spray the oranges in his paddock,to this day some still insist the mafia poisoned him.with over 20 group 1 race victories to his name PharLap was the greatest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Google him 2 read about his carreer im sure u will be impressed.

As much as I hate to say it and disappoint you, Secretariat was by far the best race horse ever. Yes he holds the record for the mile and a quarter but no he was never on steroids. What he displayed was natural speed. Secretariat raced in the Triple Crown in 1973 and if you look at his Belmont record, that was just pure genius. The horse loved to run. I understand what you are saying about Man O' War and what he did to Sir Barton. But there will probably never be another horse as fast as Secretariat. Which I might add here, he was very very loved by his owner and was humanely euthanized in 1989 due to severe severe laminitis. Hope this answers your questions.

Secretariat was the greatest thoroughbred horse of all time, who says he was on steriods? A lesser-known but perhaps more awesome accomplishment of his Derby win was the achievement the unheard-of feat of running each quarter-mile (402 m) segment fractionally faster than the one before it. The successive quarter-mile times were: 25 1/5, 24, 23 4/5, 23 2/5 and 23. Who ever heard of a horse getting FASTER as the race went on...

As far as Man O' War is concerned, If he's better it's not by much....

Horse racing is a breeders game. Secretariat is Man O'War blood line. So therefore must be better provided the breeders knew what they were doing and they did.

This is like comparing Jack Johnson to Mohammad Ali.....that would have been a good fight....somehow I believe Ali would have Won...or talked him to Death...........unfortunately Man O'war..had mostly Match races...and fields of only 5...a very build Racehorse(if any-ones on steroids)......
Secretariat was or maybe WILL BE the GREATEST Thoroughbred...during our lifetime....by the way his best race was the Preakness Stakes........he was asked to use most of his speed to catch and PASS the WHOLE FIELD in one MOVE on the FIRST TURN and also have the POWER to keep distancing HIMSELF.... UNBELIEVABLE
The tape of the race is rarely shown on TV....its to bad...it would ERASE all doubt

Hi

I think Secretariat was the best horse out of the two although his stud duties and subsequent foals did not do as well as Man o'War.

Pharlap, Seabiscuit and Northern Dancer were good.

Best breeding horse every has got to be Saddlers Wells who is still going strong today!!!

Secretariat was the better racehorse by far (and no he wasn't on steroids). But to appease you and give you bragging rights over your mom, Man O' War was more successful in the breeding shed than Secretariat.
