The media and the magazines seem to set the standards. If you look back to the 1930's or 1950's , their standard of a good female figure then is considered "fat" now. Inthe late 1960's when Twiggy hit the scene, women began starving themselves to reach the new "ideal". In the 1980's the trend shifted to fitness over thin.
Standards are set with trends and with both men and women trying to reach new ideals of what is considered sexy. Younger people tend to be more limited as to what they consider "hot", while maturity lends itself to view inner beauty as a primary qualification. A person can beautiful features but a sour attitude and be very ugly; a less asthetically pretty person can flash a genuine smile and exude self-confidence and be the most beautiful person in the world.

I think that most people look into the eye of the media and that's what sets the standard.....a lot of guys and girls look at all the celebrities and there beauty and then that sets the standard for them to the ordinary people of who is beautiful and who is not.....I think its sad....to me beauty comes from the inside.....Ive met some pretty good looking guys and some of them were just the biggest jerks....I believe an ugly personality sets you up for an ugly appearance......you can be good looking, but if you have a bad personality it will make the person less attractive.......I wish that being beautiful wasn't such an issue.....beauty is always in the eye of the beholder :o)

I think someone that is considered ugly has a very nasty manner about them selves I never say that she/he is ugly I always say they are acting in a ugly way I've been taught that ugly is as ugly does. And always ugly is in the eyes of the beholder.I can only speak for myself but a lot of who other people consider to be beautiful I don't fine them to be because they always try and do look down their nose at others and I think that at that Monte they do that that's what makes them ugly. A lot of people compare skin color, hair length, lip size, type of clothing people wear. But none of that should be the way that people consider how is ugly how is beautiful, nor set standard in com pairing others

I'd say that celebrities an the media are setting the standards for looks, equalls attractiveness !
An i think that it's wrong to judge people by how they look.
I know some lovely people who could lead a happier life if they were'nt ridiculed by society for not looking a certain way.
Looks fade with age but personality lasts a lifetime !
An reading other peoples comments i'd like to add,
Ignore the prat.....You sir are NOT ugly !

Why is there always this assumption that good-looking people have sh*t personalities and ugly people are so friendly and wonderful? Bad characters can be found behind the beautiful and the ugly. Look at Hitler!
I think it all depends on your OWN standards, so yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Of course society (fair or unfair) dictates what is beautiful or ugly...but I see by your photo that you appear to be someone of reason and we all know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder...we seek friends, lovers, relationships of many levels some which are looks, passion, shared interests, personality, likes, dislikes..etc..I know sometimes when I first meet someone that I can't quite get a handle on who they are but eventually become a very interesting person with a great personaility and a true friend..those of us who are not judgemental and open our hearts are truly enriched by who we meet and not look the other way....

usually things like symmatry come into play. It's a subconcious thing in people but the more both sides of the face match up, generally the more beautiful a person is.
other things come into play like skin texture, tone and colour.
An even colour without blemishes or patches of red is usually more pleasing to the human eye. That is what studies say.
Me personally, I cannot stand a woman who is overly made up, botoxed, breat implants, or generally trying too hard. That is the most unattractive thing to me... well, that and really fat chicks.

Many people judge others no matter who they are, i cant think of one person who i hang out with that doesn't judge others on the way they look or act when around a certain group. My group are mostly none as the like preps but we don't think so because now days preps are known as stuck up snobs who think they are better than every body but I'm not as hopefully you can tell. I like to judge people on their personality's but unlike most people. I like people who can have fun and make me laugh but others judge on the out side not personality. People who judge others are basically everybody because no matter what you judge people weather its on looks personality or anything else.
society tells us at a very young age that we have to be pretty and all in elementary through high school we are judged on looks and if you hang out with the right people so this standard is started at a very young age. it's based on a lot of things and more on your looks or bra size for girls!~ NO ONE CARES ABOUT THE BRAINS:(

Everyone has a different idea of who is hot and whos not. I think society has a certain "standard" AKA the norm of what someone should or shouldnt look like. Young people are mainly impressionable to this, the older you get the more acceptable it is to not be so perfect, but unfortunately there are alot of narrow minded people out there that think everyone should be tall, tan, blue eyed ,blonde hair color, and of course disgustingly thin or in a guys case disgustingly built. but like i said... everyone has different taste.

I don't like it getting around, but the simple truth is that it is me.
I set the standards.
My opinion, pure and simple, is what determines beauty in this world.
It's a lot of power, I know. But I appreciate that with great power comes great responsibility. For example, I met this woman once, well proportioned face and body, blonde hair, large breasts, etc. But she didn't like puppies. I felt bad, but I had to rate her not-beautiful.
That was a controversial call, some people felt I dropped the ball on that one, but I stand by my call.
