I recently broke up with my boyfriend. I didn't do a very good job of it.I didn't want to hurt his feelings so continued the relationship way beyond what I should have.I am 52 and divorced for just 18 months so wasn't really ready for what he was also.

Actually I struggle with this too. I looked at your question to try to get advice. So I will tell you what I have been told.
Be honest, don't flounder, and don't discuss problems. I was told to begin the conversation by saying I have made a decision. That way he knows it is not up for discussion. Then, don't bring up a bunch of old problems. It will just make him think it is fixable. I was told to tell him exactly why you are leaving. In my case it is, I am not in love with you. In your case it will be "I just am not ready for this relationship" Those are complaints that can't be fixed.
Once you have dropped the bomb, walk away. Stand your ground. The most painful thing you can do is to go back to him to ease your own pain and then have to go through all this breakup drama all over again. That is where I am. I told him I was leaving, then listed all the stuff he did wrong. He promised to change and I floundered. Now I know deep down that I have to put both of us through that pain again. I just hope I am stronger next time.
Hope this helps!

Just be brutally honest with him, tell him the reason for the break up in person.
