Not everyone around you is talking about you. I find people are a little conceited and paranoid.

No one should have to speak any language, it does not make them less patriotic.

NO never......but when I was in Germany.....and knew very little GOOD German. THEY would laugh and point and make gestures.
I made it my GOAL to learn German to smile and reply politely to anything negative that may have been said. When I did learn it.....I found that most of what they were saying and pointing at where the interesting clothes I was wearing or my jewelry.
Different circumstance......but oh so similar.....don't you think!

I always heard it was impolite. Others followed that rule-Italians for one-when I am with families they don't talk Italian in front of me. Or anyone of a different language. Some games on the web will not let you--its impolite to other players and yes they might talk game who would know?
It is impolite!!! Unless you really don't know anything of another language

No. But most people would agree if not everyone in the group speaks the language you do, you should have the courtesy to speak in a language everyone understands. This has been an etiquette rule as long as I can remember, why is it only spanish speakers seem to have a problem with it?

When I walk into a lunch room and people are speaking English, then they shift to Spanish, I may not think they are talking about me, but it is clear they are shutting me out. It is like suddenly starting to whisper behind their hand.
I don't think politeness should be a law, but I am allowed to have my own opinion of this behavior.
And Pancha, I know two languages too. Neither happens to be Spanish.

I find that I know enough spanish to be able to tell. However, I think I'd still know if someone was pointing to me and laughing hysterically with some of their friends. Or snickering and sneaking sly looks at me while whispering to someone else. I'm sure they wouldn't be discussing the price of beans.
Actually pig latin drives mexicans crazy. At least the ones I've met. They always presumed we were talking about them and demanded we stop it. We only did it because they spoke spanish around us so we couldn't understand. They found it highly amusing to be able to talk privately about us in our faces, they just couldn't let us do it back. But we still did!

well if they can speak english fluently they usually dont do this...for the most part. If they do then ya wonder. Better yet, learn spanish and listen...its actually funny to respond in spanish to ppl speaking it when they have no clue you can understand it.
Its courteous to speak in english when you have english speaking only ppl if you can speak english. If you dont you are just being rude. I hear pig latin is making its way back, funny.

No I am thinking they should be speaking english. Whatever they are saying. I have an immigrant wife who speaks fluent english because she wants to be here. She is Czech. She did it out of the desire to be here. Not like spanish speaking citizens who have plenty of bilingual people to be around so they could learn and choose not to.

Personally I like living in such a diverse country that I hear different languages being spoken. It's not a threat to me, nor an insult.
