I believe that much of our tooth and gum situation is hereditary. Some people, they never floss and are fine. Others (like me) must floss diligently and still need to get a pro cleaning every 6 months b/c we build plaque more quickly. A toothbrush, even a high-end battery op'd one, cannot get in between teeth at the gumline, where most issues reside. When we floss, we "scrape" between teeth, ideally a little below the gumline, wrapping each tooth. You should floss/"scrape" until it feels slick (this takes me about 6 or 7 strokes). I have found that the best time to floss is while watching tv b/c you do not feel rushed to get the job done. I learned that from my husband who is a pro flosser.

Floss is not only able to get between your teeth (where a toothbrush cannot reach), it also gets below your gums. Bacteria is constantly building below your gumline, and the only way to disturb that bacteria and stop it from colonizing is to floss daily. If that bacteria is allowed to remain under the gumline, it will begin to accumulate and you could end up with periodontal disease.
When you're flossing, try to remember to use your floss to make a "c" shape around the tooth. And, when you have floss between two teeth, make sure to get under the gumline around each tooth. It'll take two swipes of the floss to properly clean between 2 teeth.
There's a saying in the dental world. It goes like this: "You don't need to floss every tooth. Just the ones you want to keep." And it's try. It's one very simple way to ensure that you have healthy teeth and gums.

It is important to floss daily because if you don't you will get a gross tartar build-up and it will be noticeable. Also when you see the dentist they take this thing and inbetween your teeth they take out the plaque. It feels like your getting all your teeth pulled out at once and they do it over and over again. And that is why it is SO important to FLOSS daily.

Because a toothbrush cannot clean in between your teeth. You are not flossing to remove food you are flossing to remove bacteria. Flossing will help prevent both tooth decay and gum disease.

It gets rid of that build-up on your teeth and between them. If you drink milk a lot or consume large amounts of calcium, it builds up especiallyon the back of your bottom teeth.
