Should I punish a 13 year old girl who steal from the family, lies and is completely unreliable or should I give her even more attention and affection???
What is fair punishment and what really works to modify her behavior?

Well, she should be taught a lession for the lies and stealing. Try to find out why she is acting this way. Maybe, she feels unloved and left out. How good is your relationship? What is relationship with her father? Are there other kids. Maybe she is doing all this to get attetion. Make the punishment fair, but not unreasonable. Make her do chores to earn money. don't take money away all together. Or take away tv or computer time. But allow her a chance to prove herself to be a good child. Good luck>>>

it depends on the relationship you have with her. Does SHE believe that you love her. Kids know if you sincerely love them or not.

If she believes that you love her and If she regards you with trust and respect as a parental figure she might respond to punishment.

However if you are faking. If you only pay lipservice to loving her and SHE doesnt believe that you love and care about her, you punishing her is a waste of everyones time.

Before you can modify a child's behavior you gotta take a good long look in the mirror. She may be acting out as a result of the fact that she's living with a woman that doesn't really give a damn about her. If you dont love her (in the same way you would love your own biological child) dont even think about punishing her. Leave that charge to the people who sincerely love her.

My sister behaviour was very similar to this she would have mood changes with in seconds i found it very hard to be around her because she was very difficult. She tryed to kill herself countless times and refused to get any help this went on for years and last year she has a break down she was in a unit for 3 months and she was told she was bipolar. She was put on medication the problem with mental health is we no there something wrong but it is so hard to try get help for your loved one there not really any support for family members. I no how much it hurts but i would say to maybe ask your daughter to talk to the doctor or maybe if she talks about trying to kill herself try get the Police to section her on the mental health act this is a long process, but try not give up even though there gonna be lots of days you will feel like it but she your daughter and she need help good luck hope your daughter get the help she needs.

Don't give her anything but affection or see where she get's it from maybe she grew up with someone that did it, or maybe see if she is doing any drugs.
