if you have an "open ended" straight you have 8 cards to complete the straight...but if your four suited you have 9 cards to complete the flush

You're assuming you have four cards in question. If you are starting from 0 cards, statistically speaking you are more likely to pick 5 unsuited cards in numerical order (a straight) than you are to pick 5 cards out of a single suit (a flush). The less likely a hand is, the more it is "worth".

Because it is harder to get a flush than a straight.

However there is one interesting twist in the game 3 card poker. In 3 card poker, the straight ranks higher than the flush because it is harder to get the straight in 3 card poker.

its kinda harder to get 5 cards with the same suit than it is to get 5 cards with...a straight. there's only 14 cards of the same suit....argh, i'm getin confused
