Whoever told you that either doesn't have kids or is causing their children to have serious sleep issues. Your son definitely needs a nap and an EARLY bedtime. All the kids I keep in my home day care, my daughter being the oldest at 3, take at least one nap a day. The two that are under a year and a half take 2 naps a day. After lunch is the best time for your son's age, that's when they are able to get the best restorative sleep. You can limit how long he sleeps in the afternoon if you like, but I would allow him 2 hours at least. Also, the later you keep him up at night the more it will become physically impossible for him to fall asleep and stay asleep. It's a sleep myth to keep a child awake longer in hopes of them sleeping later in the morning or falling asleep faster at night. He should be in bed no later than 8pm, 7 is better. My daughter, when she was your son's age, took a 2-3 hour nap starting about 12:30 or 1pm and then went to bed at 7pm, 7:30 at the latest. Now that she is 3 she takes a 1 1/2-2 hour nap at 1pm and bedtime is 8pm. Good luck!

Naps are great for your kid. In fact, my daughter is 5 and I still think it is useful. When my daughter was 17 months she had a nap right after lunch time around 12:30...just don't make it too long if you are worried about them staying up late. Just an hour or two hours. It will be good for your mental health and their sleeping schedule. Kids need tons of sleep.

Definitely. We have four kids. Only one of them never really got on a schedule for naps and we can REALLY REALLY REALLY (did I say really?) tell it.

Our kids' naptime was 1pm and usually lasted a couple of hours and their bedtime was 7:30pm for the longest time. The two oldest ones go to bed at 9:00pm now and they are 9 and 7. They are permitted to read for 30 minutes in bed.

The 5 year old has a 8pm bedtime and is not permitted to read in bed yet.

The 2 yr old stays up till his mom goes to bed - which I strongly disagree with but my wife is bull-headed and won't listen to me. Okay, I've just been informed the 2 yr old does have a 1-2 hr nap during the day - just not on a very regular schedule and she also told me she's not bull-headed. But she is.

Someone told you a line of BS. He needs naps. My son is 4 1/2 and still takes a 2 hrs nap almost everyday. Check out www.babycenter.com to see how many hours of sleep a day kids need by age.

I am a mom of two- one 7 year old and a 2 year old, as well as a preschool teacher. Kids NEED a nap. It helps to regulate their bodies and give them the rest their bodies need for growing and brain stimulation. I have seen it too often... kids who don't take that afternoon nap are tired, cranky, uncooperative, prone to tantrums and sometimes fall asleep in their dinner. The key to naps is the timing. You want to time their afternoon nap right after lunch, to match with their natural drowsy cycle. A toddler your child's age needs to be sleeping a total of about 12-13 hours a day (including naps) This means about 10 hours at night and 2-3 hours for a nap. My youngest is 29 months, and she still takes a 2-3 hour nap in the afternoons. There is a great article about toddler's sleep needs in the June issue of Parents Magazine on the newsstands right now (pgs 146-150) that we just passed out to the parents at the center I work for. If you lay your child down after lunch time, and make sure he is up again by about 3:30 (4:00 at the latest) he will still be tired enough to lay down at bedtime (about 7:00-7:30pm). Believe me, it will save your sanity and make things run more smoothly in your household to have a happy, rested toddler! Lots of luck!

at 17 months your child still needs naps. and a regular bed time. Naps can be anywhere from 45min to 2 1/2 hrs. Just make his naps early enough where bed time isn't effected.
My daughter (21mo) wakes up around 7:00am Naps after lunch around 12:00-1:30/2:00. then goes to bed around 8:30. SHe has been on this scheedule for aver six months.

Children need naps until they are 5 or 6 and some even longer than that. When my son was 17 months he napped from after lunch (12ish) until about 2. He was always happier after a nap. His naps got shorter as he got older and didn't need as much sleep. His bedtime was 8-8:30 everynight except weekends and summer until he was in middle school. We were usually up by 6am. As your child gets older you will know if they are getting enough sleep or not. Even as mine got older is bedtime was judged by how easy he was to get up in the morning. If I had to beg and plead and pull on him to get him up that meant he was not getting enough rest. You'll do just fine. It seems to come naturally. Don't forget to rest yourself.

yes it is good for a 17 month old to take a nap. My son used to wake up around 8am or 9am and would take a nap around 12 or 1pm. Sleep for two hours and go to bed around 8 or 9pm. My son is 2 years old and still takes naps.
