Almost all of my extended family, on both sides (Aunts, Uncles, cousins, Grandparents) are just really awful people. There's no gentle way to put that. They are (to varying degrees) rude, self-absorbed, manipulative, greedy, racist, and make fun of people different from themselves...the few genuinely kind, nice, educated people all left years ago. They're older, around 30-80. I'm 17. I'm trying to get in touch with them (and find the good parts of my heritage). How do I show them I'm not like the rest of the family?

i think everyone's answer is good, so i'll just agree with them. be yourself. send them a card or a brief letter to open some lines of communication. i don't know if i'd go into the whole "my whole family are jerks and i'm trying to find some sane people like me in it" thing at first.

just open the lines of communication. be yourself. letter writing is an under used skill nowadays--and yet everyone likes to get a letter!

best of luck!

Just be yourself and let them see you are different. They will be able to tell right away by your manner. Send a polite card, or phone call.

Only your actions will show them your true nature.

Contact them, write them, share yourself and interests with them. Don't ask any favors, and be willing to help.

actions speak louder than words

write to them, show them you want to make an effort to talk to them, just taking that first step will show your not like the rest of them.

good luck
