I would take the dog to the vet, and then, get a second opinion just to be safe, or insist on xrays.
When I was a kid, I had a small breed dog about a year old that would whine and cry when he was sleeping.
We took him to the vet and the vet said it was growing pains..I had never heard of them, but I trusted the vet. Well...3 days later my dog died! We never found out what the dog died of (parents wouldn't pay for it) but I think if the vet would have taken xrays, or blood work, we may have known what the dog had...obviously it wasnt growing pains.

I know you will probably hear this one a million times... but its true. You need to call up your vet and make an appointment. There are a dozen different conditions that are a possibility for his pain or discomfort. You will probably have an x-ray charge, possible blood work, and the visit fee. But it will be worth it to find out. It is always better to find something out right away. Waiting can cause more problems or higher bills. Prevention is #1 in any type of healthcare costs or risks. Best of luck!!!

Normally 'growing pains' are seen in large breed dogs and the pain is in the leg and hip joints. The area you are describing probably isn't a growing pain, and he needs to be seen by the vet to determine the cause.

I've never heard a dog having growing pains before, you should take him in. It could be something serious.

perhaps someone kicked him in the side and cracked a rib or maybe he got hit by a car or bike.
you may want to take him to the vet, it could put your mind to ease or maybe even save his life if it's more serious...
