the best kind of dog for a child is one that has adequate training... any dog can be good with kids as long as they are raised properly and the children are taught the proper way to act around them..... I have had Chihuahuas straight through to mastiffs, APB T's, Rotts, Shepherds... all were good or great with kids.... Just make sure the breed is one that fits your lifestyle... In other words if your a laid back kinda family a Lab may not be a good match for you, they can be hyper....Or vice versa a laid back Dane may not be suitable for an active family.... Again, do some research and find a breed that fits your lifestyle

In raising my six boys, you can believe they brought home every breed of dog, which we`d sometimes let them keep, well the Beagle Hound was quite gentle, and lovable, the German Shepherds were watchful and protective of the kids, and more playful than the Beagle, I taught the children that dogs can and will bite, so don`t pull its hair, etc. be kind and it will love you,the poodle was the worst kind we ever had and quite expensive to keep. Oh how could I forget the Muttleys they were all great pets for the kids and loved all the family members.

Hi,
I think it depends on the age of your children and their sex. Since little boys are often a little rougher than little girls, you'll probably want a dog that's a little "sturdier," yet easy going. Most people opt for Labs and Retrievers. The only thing is that if your kids are smaller, then these high energy dogs may be too much for them until they're a little older.
If your kids are smaller (i.e. under 5), I'd choose a small breed. I have a Shih Tzu and she is gentle, easy going and loves to play.

a larger mutt. Small dogs tend to get grumpy or stick to one person. I would say get a medium dog that will play but also stay calm when needed. Pit bulls and boxers are great if you want a purebred.
Purebred dogs also tend to have more problems.
Don't be stupid and buy a purebred cockapoo or puggle. If someone tries to sell you a breed you haven't heard of....don't be stupid and buy it. Those aren't even purebred.
People who are breed specific are just going by what they like. Go to the ASPCA or other animal shelter. Some have tests that match you with a perfect dog. Also again mutts don't usually inherit the super problems purebred dogs do.

how old are the kids? if you get a puppy and the kids are old enough not to pull on ears and tails then any breed should be fine... if they're younger you should be more selective of the breed... if you want a small dog a dachshund is great with kids, they have the attitude of a big dog and the energy to play and run with them... if you want a big dog a lab is always a good choice...

There are lots of breeds that are good with kids, but the best place to get a great dog is your local humane society. If it's a good one they will evaluate the dogs there and let you know what age children the dog will be good with.

Our female black lab has always been wonderful with the children, and she was around before they were, so she had to adjust to their presence. Very patient, loving, and well-behaved, but also lots and lots of fun! Gentle disposition.
I wouldn't get a smaller dog if you have small kids, as the littlest pets may sometimes get batted around or have their hair pulled by the little kids and the pets eventually end up feeling threatened.

I think for a big dog you would either like a Lab or Collie but I'll tell you the best advice I got was to get a Pug and sure enough he's wonderful. Very playful and very easy going and Ive talked to ALOT of Pug owners and we all agree , Pugs are definitely GREAT kid dogs, they arent so big that the baby or kids get hurt and yet they are sturdy enough to hold their own. Gosh we LOVE our Pug!!!!!

the question is what kid is best for a dog.........most people think that certain dogs are mean around kids, when really, its not the dogs fault. most kids havent been taught to respect an animal, therefore, they tend to do thinks like pick it up by the neck and carry it around, or jump on it, or pull its tail, or not leave it alone when they dog clearly wants to be left alone. thats why most children under the age of 15 get attacked by dogs, because kids that young dont understand that an animal can be hurt, scared etc, like people, and alot of parents dont take the time to teach their children to respect an animal, so i dont think its what kind of dog is good for your kid, its have you taught your kid how to respect animals? not saying your havent! but that is something you have to do before you get an animal for your child
